Debbie Nelson, Eminem's Mother, Dies at 69

Debbie Nelson, the mother of legendary rapper Eminem, has passed away at 69. She died on Monday, December 2, in St. Joseph, Missouri, after battling lung cancer. News of her illness came out earlier this year in September.

Born in 1955 on a military base in Kansas, Debbie grew up as the oldest of five kids in what she once described as a “large dysfunctional family.”

When her parents split up, she took on big responsibilities at home, caring for her siblings and managing household chores from a young age. She shared these struggles and more in her 2008 memoir, My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem.

Life wasn’t easy for Debbie. By 11, she was out collecting surplus food for the family and doing everything she could to keep things running at home.

She married Marshall Bruce Mathers Jr., Eminem’s dad at just 16 years old. Two years later, she had her first son, Marshall Bruce Mathers III—the world’s future Eminem—on October 17, 1972, in Saint Joseph, Missouri.

She almost died when giving birth to Eminem

Eminem’s birth wasn’t smooth either. Debbie endured 72 hours of labor, seizures, and even fell into a coma after delivery.

Also, Debbie and the rapper’s relationship was complicated and well-documented in his music. Eminem’s 2002 track “Cleanin’ Out My Closet” openly aired their struggles, and things escalated when Debbie sued him for defamation, seeking $11 million.

She won the case, but was only awarded $25,000—most of which went to legal fees. Despite their public battles, Debbie remained hopeful for a reconciliation, telling *The Village Voice* in 2008, “It’s over, it’s done. You need to move on.”

Then, the turning point seemed to come in 2013 with Eminem’s song “Headlights,” which many saw as an apology. In the track, he sings: “Thank you for being my mom and my dad.”

“Just heard his mom passed away. From someone who also grew up with a difficult relationship with his mother and an absent father, this song speaks volumes. Sometimes, it’s hard to forgive our parents, but those are the ones we had placed before us. Some of us out there are the product of our parents generational trauma” and ” I’m happy Em got to make this song for her before she passed. He got to show his true appreciation, especially after such a crazy rollercoaster of a relationship during the peak of his career. Much love” are some of the comments that can be read in the Youtube video.

In recent years, Debbie showed pride in her son from a distance. When the singer was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, she shared a heartfelt message: “I love you very much. I knew you’d get there. It’s been a long ride. I’m very, very proud of you.”

Her passing comes four years after the rapper’s estranged father, Marshall Bruce Mathers Jr., died in 2019 at 67.
