Fans rejoice as Netflix releases the main trailer for its much-anticipated dark fantasy series, The Witcher, based on a series of books that have captured the imagination of many across the world.
Audiences at the Lucca Comics and Games convention in Lucca, Italy, were the first to enjoy the trailer, which features magic, monsters, and incredible action sequences—with more footage than ever of the show’s famous protagonist, Geralt of Rivia. The trailer was released during a panel where series creator Lauren Schmidt Hissrich talked alongside protagonists Anya Chalotra (who plays Yennefer) and Feya Allan (playing Ciri).
About The Witcher
The show is based on the best-selling book series of the same name, featuring an epic story full of romance, dark magic, threatening monsters, and the mysterious group of mutated humans who hunt them—for a price. These powerful monster-hunting warriors are known as Witchers, and the story focuses on one of the most famous of them: Geralt of Rivia (played by Henry Cavill).
As Geralt makes his way through a disturbing world where hate and discrimination against his kind run rampant, he must face new dangers from within the human race as well as from without. Political intrigue catches up to the Witcher, who must now make a fateful choice between himself and the world he loves. It all sounds pretty good, doesn’t it?
In fact, the books became so successful that they were promptly adapted into video games—which themselves came to be among the most celebrated games of all time.
Something to look forward to
For lovers of the fantasy genre and The Witcher in particular, this trailer is pretty good news.
Many were skeptical when Cavill (Man of Steel, Mission Impossible: Fallout) was first cast as Geralt, but we can all now put our fears to rest: the actor nails the Geralt vibe perfectly, from the moves to the voice (which will be nicely familiar to fans of the games).
What’s more, the trailer confirmed the show’s release date. Yep, we now know it’s coming on December 20 this year—just a few weeks away.
