After starring in one of the biggest scandals in the history of the Oscar Awards, Will Smith announced his resignation as a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Through a statement, the winner for best actor in the last installment said that he will accept any future sanction determined by the film institution.
“I resign my membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and will accept any other consequences that the Board deems appropriate,” the actor wrote in a text published by Variety magazine.
In addition, the actor again apologized to the comedian, as well as to the organizers of the ceremony and the general public.
“My actions at the 94th Academy Awards were shocking, painful and inexcusable. The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, everyone in attendance and the global audience at home.”
Finally, the actor acknowledged having betrayed the trust of the Academy and ruining the celebration of those people who were also nominated.
“I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I have deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for his extraordinary work. I have a broken heart”
“I want to refocus the spotlight on those who deserve the spotlight for their achievements and allow the Academy to return to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film.”
