Some of the most valuable lessons Bob Ross taught us in his show.

After the hype of the new Deadpool movie announcement, people also brought another topic to the table: the immortal Bob Ross, who was comically epitomized by the reddish antihero. We all laughed and felt a little nostalgia too. Those who knew and watched his show remember that Bob Ross was an amazing painter. His landscapes were all hauntingly beautiful, and his technique was visually soothing. But there was something about this artist that we all enjoyed more than watching him paint colorful locations. He was a happy man, who created happy paintings and sent happy thoughts to all art lovers out there, who eventually felt inspired by his unwavering positive attitude. His art was, at the end of the day, just a means for his heartwarming messages for all artists that needed an extra push to believe in themselves.

After more than 30,000 artworks and 31 seasons of The Joy of Painting, we remember the legendary Bob Ross for all those heartfelt embraces and lessons in art he sent throughout the years:

Challenging yourself is a good thing.

Life gets complicated for those who dare to go outside their comfort zone. For Bob Ross, challenges were opportunities to improve, to be better at anything. Sometimes, it may seem hard to accept something when it’s not what we’re used to, but at the end of the day, the outcome makes it worthwhile. That’s why challenges are a good thing. They are life’s way of saying “You can do better, so go for it!”

Mistakes are just part of the process.

Don’t be afraid of failure. It is part of the job of being an artist. In order to become a pro, you first have to try something over and over again, until you master it. In the meantime, you will fail, a lot, maybe more than you expected to, but that’s okay! Don’t feel frustrated. Every famous artist out there had a starting point and made a lot of mistakes before becoming talented and popular.

Believe that your dreams are possible.

The key to success in the art world also entails a lot of faith. You must believe in yourself and your ability of creating with what you have and what you know. If you feel like you’re not enough, you’ll never achieve your wildest dreams. Don’t rush anything. It takes time to get where we want to, but eventually, we all do. Just trust in yourself!

Ignore negative criticism.

Don’t feel discouraged by other people’s opinions. Everybody will have something to say, and while some people will do it to help you out, they aren’t living the same process as you. So, receive their words as good advice, but don’t take them personally. Develop your artistic career at your own pace. Only you will know what’s best for you, no matter what everyone has to say.

Help others, and let others help you too.

Support others, and let them do the same, because modesty and solidarity are one of the most powerful tools for any artist out there. This may be easier said than done, because we feel we have to make it on our own, but this is not necessarily true. There are other artists that are also going through a similar path, and they may know a big deal of what you’re going through so you can learn from them.

Let go of your fears and insecurities.

When we start building an artistic career, we tend to feel overwhelmed by professionals, and that may discourage us a little. Nonetheless, the art world itself demands accepting who we are, embracing it, and using that to create cool stuff. So, share what you do with the world. Don’t worry, f*ck what others say, believe in yourself, and let your fears go away. You can do this!

Bob Ross was overall a very nice man. He did what he truly felt passionate for, and he did it with love. That's why he reflected his life's beliefs and views in his art. Isn’t that what we all are looking for?
