“I have had dreams and I have had nightmares, but I have conquered my nightmares because of my dreams.”
It feels so real that sometimes I don't even know how to tell a dream from real life. I wake up in anguish, breathing anxiously, and scared about what might happen to me. I don't really know where these unpleasant images are coming from; it's as if everything coming from my mind belongs to a Sci-Fi movie or a horror short story by Lovecraft. This angst of being devoured by an alien or a fierce creature doesn't belong only to the world of dreams. What can you do when fear takes over your body?
It may sound so unrealistic, but when you feel that some mysterious vein-like figures are covering your face as if they were alive, there's no turning back, this horror will never let you go. Even if you manage to wake up from that heinous dream, you feel like your heart is going to explode. When you just want to shut down your mind, the only way you can relieve your soul is by showing it to the world.
Adam Pizurny is a 29-year-old Czech artist who portrays sick and extravagant realities through animated images and GIFs. These images, appear as if parasites were devouring someone from the inside out.
He shows impassive bodies being consumed by a force stronger than itself.
Adam explains that when he was a boy he wanted to be an inventor, and although he managed to fulfill his dream, he did it in a unique and different way. He started drawing on paper until he discovered the graffiti technique, which showed him a world he never thought existed, a world where his main inspirations –David Lynch's movies, M.C. Escher's artwork, and fractals– would merge with colors, shapes, and digital tools.
Having an external being travel under your skin is a fear Adam masterfully represents through dynamic images. The smooth skin of the subjects is marred by the alien force and we can't tell whether it is an external force or if these sinuous tendrils come from within.
Probably some won't feel strong enough to digest these images, but art and pleasure also lie in grotesque and revolted expressions. Besides, who hasn't felt something strange coursing through their body while they sleep...?
