Will there ever true order in an erotic encounter? Is it possible that, for all our attempts at creating a sense of an ideal and perfect environment, when we let go on behalf of a moment of sheer pleasure, we revel in the pure chaos? When we stop trying so hard to be perfect humans and give in to our desires, we can reach true sexual fulfillment.

However, we tend to forget that. We go back to the patterns of our everyday, trying to find happiness while attempting to control all the variables of our life. Sometimes we require a wakeup call, a reminder that life is not a perfect square shape. A little kick to take us towards our most natural state, one where we accept the unexpected as it walks into our reality.

What if one day, as you were walking home from school or work, rethinking things over and over, you bumped into a visual representation that shocked you out of your imposed state? You’d be on the street, looking left and right before crossing, when suddenly an image of pure sensuality was there, waiting for you to lose yourself in its imagery.

Mik Shida is a street artist who creates erotic scenes that take out of our regular routine and into a fantasy world of possibilities. The main esthetic of his work lies in the fact that the characters gracing these walls look more alien than human. It’s through this detachment that we stop considering boundaries or imposed standards of what’s okay versus weird when it comes to sex. When we begin to search for what arouses or activates our deepest desires, instead of what society believes we should do, we open ourselves to the possibility of actually achieving true pleasure and freedom.

Unlike other artistic depictions of sexual and erotic encounters, Shida’s street art is a shock to our system. It’s not full frontal nor in-your-face, but almost cubist. But we connect to it through the colorful bodies we see in front of us. These non-human faces do not show an expression of ecstasy, yet we can understand it as such. It’s as if he’s left a secret message in code for anyone who dares to truly examine his murals.

Street art is slowly becoming the way new emerging artists express ideas without the boundaries of traditional art. They’re not told how to do things, what is proper and what wrong, because it’s such a free medium. Like the feelings that Shida’s work provokes in us, it’s the release in his chosen art form what allows him to create these fantastical scenarios and pieces.

While most of his work is made in his native Australia, we can appreciate their beauty even from our screens, oceans away. We might not have the same effect as if we witnessed an erotic encounter that stands ten feet tall on the side of a building. But we can still take them in as reminders that there is more to life than achieving what we believe is perfection.
