You don’t even need to spend tons of money; the challenge of making changes with a tight budget will also help you focus on that instead on how devastated you are.
The walls are your canvas and you can decorate them with mementos or souvenirs from your travels or hobbies. Just make sure they suit one type of palette or style.

If possible, change the position of your furniture, experiment with decoration, and create a whole new place clean from all those things in the past that could make you feel sad.
Simplicity can go a long way. You can buy intricate bean bag sofas in the local flea market or you can adapt garden swings for the bedroom, a comfy pillow can be just the trick you need. Also don't be afraid to give objects that you don't use a new purpose, like a wooden ladder.
The most important thing to bear in mind while redecorating your place is to always think of yourself, on the things you want, and in making this new spot your sanctuary. You like a particular paint color in your walls that others would consider weird? Who cares? Paint it. Those beddings are way too much? You shouldn't care. Your place, your rules. If getting an unconventional painting on your wall makes you happy, just do it. The trick is to fill the place with reminders of what makes you happy so whenever you’re about to have a meltdown or just feel a bit blue you can look at these and fill a bit better.

Finally, you know what they say about retail therapy? Go to the market, the mall, or wherever you want and get some stuff to refresh your place. You don’t have to spend too much; thinking and selecting things for your newly refurbished room will distract you and, most importantly, make you feel excited about your project.

I know breakups can be terrible, and sometimes we don’t even have the strength to get up in the morning and continue with our lives. But to be honest, at the end of the day, the only one that ends up losing with that attitude is yourself. That’s why projects like these not only help keep ourselves busy, but they can give us a new perspective about something, and this can be the best therapy to overcome a heartbreak. Changes are always good, and they’re better if they’re changes you’re doing for yourself.
