If you wish you had a beautiful and loyal love, getting a puppy is the best option. It will be there for you in good times and bad, and it'll be the best companion you could ever have.
We often think we’ll find the most perfect love in someone who truly understands us, who is loyal, and who will be there no matter what, but we also often find that perfection and love don’t always go together. Now, I don’t mean to brag, but I’ve already found this perfect, unconditional, and mutual love. She's there rain or shine, gets really excited every day when I get home, and wakes me up with kisses in the morning. And yes, it's my dog.
Coco is a West Highland White Terrier that arrived into my life three years ago. Since then, my life has changed completely, from waking up really early on the weekends to take her for a walk, to sharing a large part of my bed with her. I hadn't thought about how important a pet is in a person’s life, until I realized we humans are the world to these creatures.
I found the illustrations of Yaoyao Ma Van As on Instagram, where she draws herself with her dog Parker, and they are so relatable that they've helped me realize why having a dog is the most perfect love ever.
Cuddling up on a Saturday night
Whenever I'm Netflix and chill-ing by myself at home, my doggie loves cuddling on my lap. Cuddling is one of the ways a dog can show affection and let you know how strong their bond is with their human. When this happens, it increases your levels of oxytocin, the love hormone.
When you work out together
I love running, and my dog is like my personal trainer. Sometimes we go running together, and she goes so fast that I improve in my speed trainings. But other times, we just go on long walks that also help me clear my mind and allow her to explore a little. It’s a win-win for both of us!
They will protect you from strange noises, people, or things
The doorbell rings. Coco barks. The plumber arrives to fix something. Coco barks. A stranger is walking behind me. Coco barks. Dogs are always going to protect you from anything that could put you in danger. Even if it's the guy you’re dating coming over to your place for the first time, because who knows if he is good or not...
If you’re working, they (often) respect your time...
I love working from home. I’m more productive. And I love that Coco is always there next to my desk. Sometimes she is just lying there, looking out the window, and other times I feel so jealous when I see her sleeping because someone needs to work to buy dog food, and that someone is me.
...But at times they will ask for your attention
Coco loves her ball. She gets obsessed with it and wants to play all day long. She usually carries the ball and drops it next to my feet so we can play. It is like when you call your best friend to hang out, right?
They won’t judge you no matter how horribly you sing
This is a true depiction of my daily routine: getting dressed while singing along to my favorite songs, and my dog just watching and listening like “wow, you’re the best singer I know!” even as I sing horribly. Now, that’s love.
No matter how many toys they have, you will always be their favorite
Your dog (like mine) can have lots of balls, and plush and squeeze toys, but none of those will be enough, if you are not there to play with them. You can have a fun time at the park throwing the ball countless times, but believe me, nothing compares to seeing your dog happy about spending time with their beloved human.
Your love is unconditional (even if that means picking up their poop)
Picking up your dog's poop might not be your favorite thing to do with your doggie, but over time, you learn that they trust you completely and that you are the world to them. Then, they become the world to you.
When life is a mess, those eyes will fix everything
Yes, dogs love to make messes, destroy your favorite sofa, and eat important documents. But even when you want to get really angry at them, you will look at their big, beautiful eyes, and you'll have no choice but to forgive everything.
They will share the happiest moments with you
Unfortunately, dogs don’t have very long lives, but they will be there in the happiest times, in those moments when you are living your life to the fullest, being proud of who you are and what you do, and as some people say, being the person your dog thinks you are.
So, the next time you feel lonely, look at your dog, how it wags its tail when it sees you, how it jumps to greet you, and how it licks you to show you how happy it is with you. I truly believe those are proof of the most honest love of all. And I love it.
