One year after the release of Kubrick’s adaptation of Anthony Burgess’ dystopian novel, the United Kingdom was struck by several crimes that seemed to have been inspired by the film: gang-based assaults, sexual abuses where the predators sung ‘Singing in the Rain’, and many other attacks which basically confirmed that the movie starring Alex DeLarge was far from being inconsequential.

Now, nearly 60 years after the novel was first published and 50 years since the film’s release, a new manuscript has been discovered penned by Anthony Burgess himself. Titled A Clockwork Condition, the 200-page text can very well be considered a long-lost sequel to A Clockwork Orange.

What is it about?

In it, the English writer explores the violence that followed the film, the crimes that were committed in its name, and the consequences it effected on English society. The manuscript was found in the author’s home in Bracciano, Italy, 19 miles outside of Rome.

According to Professor Andrew Biswell, a Burgess scholar and one of the foremost experts on the topic, the sole testimony about A Clockwork Condition consists in an otherwise unremarkable interview in which Burgess mentions the idea to work on an unspecified text. Interestingly enough, the discovered manuscript is nearly completed, and deals with society’s condition, the mental state of its individuals, and the damage technology and visual culture has brought upon it. The text also delves deeper into the themes of crime, punishment, and the human condition.

What can we expect?

Surely, A Clockwork Condition will immediately peak the interest of both the film industry (bent on bringing the sequel to the big screen) and many publishing houses competing to publish the work. They will all try to turn Burgess’ meditations into an instant best-seller, catapulted from the already well-established platform that his legendary novel has built since 1962. And who are we kidding? Fans are already dying to find out what’s hidden in the mysterious pages of A Clockwork Condition anyway, so it won’t be a hard sell at all.
