America Ferrera is a source of pride for Latinas worldwide, and her role in Barbie showcased the strength within her spirit. Her powerful speech in the movie resonated with thousands of women of all races, but her portrayal as Gloria in Barbie was particularly significant for the visibility of Hispanic women.
Now, America Ferrera is at the Oscars 2024 ceremony, held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Sadly, the great America has not won any Oscars thus far tonight, but it’s a tremendous achievement that she’s nominated for the first time in her decade-long career. Ferrera’s character reflects a reality experienced by many of us, men and women, parents who feel displaced by their teenage children but strive to provide good parenting without losing themselves in the process. It also reflects a reality women face every day.

Perhaps for some, Ferrera’s final speech in Barbie may have seemed somewhat generic, and in some ways, they’re right because feminism, femininity, and what it means to be a woman go far beyond what’s presented in the movie. However, it encapsulates a reality that isn’t hidden but many choose not to see.

America Ferrera at the Oscars 2024
America Ferrera’s presence as part of the Latino community and other Black women nominated is a watershed moment for racial disparities in Hollywood, and all deserve to enjoy their nominations and awards. This doesn’t imply that white women and men shouldn’t also celebrate, but historically, it’s a source of pride to see other communities triumph in a world dominated by stereotypes.
