The pop star now finds herself at the center of a controversy not due to anything she said or did—but rather an unexpected oversight that cost her a fine.
Katty’s Fine and the Investigation
In July 2024, Katy Perry filmed the music video for “Lifetimes”, choosing as her backdrop the Balearic Islands—specifically the dunes of S’Espalmador, part of the protected Parc Natural de Ses Salines between Ibiza and Formentera. Authorities later launched an investigation, concluding that the production lacked the necessary permits to film in this environmentally sensitive area. Although no significant environmental damage was found, the offense was classified as “serious,” and a fine of €6,001 (approximately $7,000 USD) was imposed.

Permit Dispute
Katy Perry’s record label, Capitol Records, defended the production, stating that the local production company had secured verbal approval from authorities. They reported that a permit application was submitted on July 22, with verbal clearance received on July 26, allowing filming to proceed the next day. Despite the claim of compliance, environmental regulators emphasized that proper written authorization is mandatory for filming in such protected areas.
The Natural and Cultural Value of the Site
S’Espalmador is considered the most well-preserved dune system in the Balearic Islands—an area rich in biodiversity, home to over 200 species of migratory birds, Posidonia seagrass, and fragile dune ecosystems. It has been part of the Natural Park since 1980 and holds UNESCO World Heritage status.
Context: The “Lifetimes” Music Video Rollout
The video for “Lifetimes”, released August 8, 2024, was part of Katy Perry’s 143 album campaign. The video, directed by Stillz, features summer visuals: Perry on a boat off Ibiza’s coast, riding a motorcycle through Formentera, dancing in clubs, and revealing the 143 album tracklist in a beach setting. The launch followed a lukewarm reception for her lead single, “Woman’s World.”

The fine was reportedly settled promptly by the production company once issued. Supporters argue that while the incident sparked negative headlines, it did not result in lasting ecological harm. Yet the episode raises important questions about balancing star-studded production demands and environmental preservation.
