Madonna Opens Up About Suicidal Thoughts
In a recent interview for the podcast On Purpose, Madonna shared one of the most difficult periods of her life: when she faced a legal battle with her ex-husband, Guy Ritchie, whom she was married to from 2000 to 2008. The two ended up in court fighting over the custody of their son, Rocco Ritchie. Eight years had passed since their separation, and they had maintained a cordial relationship for the sake of their child. But when the custody dispute arose and Rocco was 15, everything changed.
It was during this 2016 battle that the pop icon says she seriously contemplated suicide due to the emotional pain she was feeling. She even said it would hurt less to cut her arms than to lose her son.
“There were moments in my life when I wanted to cut my arms off. I couldn’t bear the pain. That someone would try to take my son away from me… it felt like it would be better if they just killed me,”Madonna confessed during the interview.
The pain only intensified when her own son chose to distance himself from her. She added that during those years, she wasn’t just under legal pressure; she was also under immense stress from her stage commitments. “I would spend my time crying on the floor of my dressing room. I truly thought it was the end of the world and I couldn’t handle it,” said the pop diva.

That chapter of her life ended with an agreement allowing her son to move to the U.K. with his father. Since then, Madonna’s life has changed. She decided to focus on her health and said that something that helped her tremendously was the practice of Kabbalah, which allowed her to reframe her experiences as lessons with a purpose rather than as punishment.
