The Comeback of the Year? Robert Downey Jr. Explains his Return as Iron Man

A new edition of ‘Actors on Actors’ has finally been released by Variety magazine. As part of this season, we’ll have a chat between Robert Downey Jr. and Jodie Foster, who engaged in a very interesting conversation about their on-screen careers.

Among other things, they talked about some of their most iconic characters and how they approach making movies and television. Some of the projects discussed include ‘Sr.,’ the documentary where Robert Downey Jr. talks about the film career of his late father, and the latest season of HBO’s ‘True Detective’ with Jodie Foster as the lead.

Is there any comeback?

During the chat, Jodie Foster asked Robert Downey Jr. if he would consider reprising his role as Iron Man and Tony Stark in the future. The 59-year-old actor responded:

It’s just crazily in my DNA. Probably the most like-me character I’ve ever played, even though he’s way cooler than I am. I’ve become surprisingly open-minded to the idea.

Although he didn’t officially confirm his return as Iron Man (and Marvel hasn’t revealed any plans to bring the character back), it seems there’s a possibility we might see him don the suit at least one more time in the future.

This is quite significant considering that during the last awards season, Robert Downey Jr. made an acceptance speech for his Best Actor award for his role in Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer,’ where many accused him of being ungrateful for giving us one of Marvel’s most iconic characters.

On another note, it’s said that producer Susan Downey, who brought us the first two ‘Sherlock Holmes’ films starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law and directed by Guy Ritchie, is looking to bring the team back for a third installment of literature’s most important British detective.

In the interview with Jodie Foster, Robert Downey Jr. talked more about those characters from his film career with whom he has most identified besides Tony Stark and Iron Man:

Between “Nyad” and [“Night Country”] and, for me, “Oppenheimer” and then “Sympathizer,” it really is crazy because we look pretty good. I was actually looking at the stills we were taking, making sure: “Do we still look kind of OK?” I’m like, “We look pretty good.”
