Shakira's Tax Fraud Accusation Is Finally Dismissed By The Public Prosecutor's Office

The year 2023 was particularly challenging for Shakira, as she not only had to deal with her separation but also faced a tax fraud lawsuit in Spain that made headlines worldwide.

And although the story ended on a bittersweet note, as the singer had to pay an impressive multi-million euro fine to settle matters with Spanish law, all signs indicate that this chapter in her life will be completely erased.

Today, the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Spain requested that the tax fraud accusation against Shakira be dismissed due to insufficient evidence to maintain it.

In a statement, the Public Ministry explained that it considers there is not enough evidence to criminally prosecute the famous singer for allegedly committing tax fraud in the fiscal year of 2018.

Why was Shakira accused of tax fraud?

Shakira was accused of tax fraud because prosecutors claimed that between 2012 and 2014, the singer, who had her official residence outside the European country, did not pay taxes in Spain for living in the country for more than the 183 days stipulated by law.

The artist’s trial concluded with an agreement between her and the Spanish prosecutor’s office, which included the payment of a fine of over 7.3 million euros, equivalent to around 8 million dollars, in order to close the case.
