Contemporary society focuses most of its energy in suppressing and avoiding pain. Unlike our primitive ancestors, we attempt to protect ourselves from suffering as much as we can. Even when it becomes inevitable, we do our best to hide from it.
As a response, works such as those by artist Min Liu take everyday situations and turn them into pieces that speak louder than words.
Min Liu is a Taiwanese motion graphics designer and animator. Her unique style is defined by her dark humor. One of her current series is the Bloody Dairy Project where she challenged herself to do one animation per day for 100 days. Her animated gifs mix the cute, the gory, and the comedic. This collection is flooded with severed limbs gallivanting about without the need of their former body.
The animations often include cats and other creatures in surreal situations, with a simple palette of only red, black, and white. The colors work perfectly with the bizarre narrative to illustrate the strange humor included in the animation.
Min Liu believed her future to be as an accountant until the day she stumbled upon a book by Aaron Nieh. Her life’s direction changed, since she began her studies towards a career in visual arts. She first began solely as a graphic designer until she found her passion in animation.
Sense of humor is one of the few elements that is never missing from her animation challenge. Min Liu admits she takes inspiration from random situations and objects she came across while doing the project.
