If you’re like me, you have enough clothes to dress at least three people, but your closet space is not enough for even one person. It’s a never-ending dilemma for renters and city dwellers everywhere; you just don’t have enough room for all your clothes, and sometimes you don’t even have a closet! So, the only thing you have to work with is a sad corner in your bedroom where you have to hang everything you own. Recently, I moved out, and my new bedroom is really small to the point where I only have space for my bed, a nightstand, and a small desk to work. So, as you can imagine I had to get a little creative when it came to my wardrobe. A regular one wasn’t really an option because it would take over half of the space, so I opted for an open closet, making the most of the empty space in my tiny room. If you’re looking for ways to maximize your space and still make your room look organized and cool, here are some ideas you can get inspired by.
Get creative with pipes
Let me tell you that pipes became my best friends in this mission. Plus, they were a really affordable option. You can get these at any hardware store, and there are many materials you can choose to make it go with your overall style. You can use these to create racks to hang your clothes, or to make some shelves.
Adapt your closet to your walls
As I mentioned before, my only option was using the little space that one of my walls offered, so I really had to use every single inch of it. The idea is to turn your open wardrobe into a new wall. This way, not only will you have a bigger space to work with, but it’ll also give the impression of a bigger room. You can even use them as “dividers,” to separate spaces at your place, if you don’t want to focus only on your room.
Assemble modular closets
Modular closets are great because you can assemble them however you want to fill each empty space. You can get one of those that are already made, or create your own with pipes, boxes, or shelves. The idea is to measure your space and know in advance what you’re going to store there, so that it doesn’t end up looking cramped and messy.
Experiment with hanging racks
Right now, I’m thinking of going for some hanging racks, since I still have stuff in boxes. This idea is great to actually start taking advantage of all that empty space near your ceiling. The only thing you have to make sure is that the hangers are resistant enough to carry all the weight and that you don’t place too much stuff in there, so that your room looks really organized.
Take the easy way out with mobile racks
Sometimes there’s no need to over-complicate your life. If you’re not really into doing major renovations, you can get some mobile racks and forget about everything. There are some really cool ones that already include some shelves, or you can adapt yours.
Reuse old stuff
Finally, if you don’t want to spend that much on your new closet, you can always reuse old stuff to assemble something quite creative and really functional. One of the trendiest ideas is to use an old wooden ladder you can either hang on the roof or even use two with a wooden tube to create a rack. Use your imagination, and it’ll end up looking more original than anything you could buy.
The idea when it comes to the open wardrobes that are so popular nowadays is to see them as if they were part of your room’s decor. Since everything will be visible, try organizing your clothes according to color or size, and use the same kind of hangers, so that it all has a cohesive look. To be honest, I was really nervous to go for this option, since I thought it would end up looking messy and cramped, but it’s the best idea I’ve ever had. I promise you won’t regret it!
