Austin Butler Will Replace Christian Bale in New “American Psycho” Adaptation

It’s official—Austin Butler has been tapped to play Patrick Bateman in a fresh adaptation of American Psycho, directed by Luca Guadagnino, best known for Call Me By Your Name and Suspiria. Produced by Lionsgate, the project is not a remake of the cult-classic 2000 film but rather a new interpretation of Bret Easton Ellis’ provocative 1991 novel.

Christian Bale’s chilling performance as Patrick Bateman in the original American Psycho is widely regarded as iconic. His portrayal of the twisted, hyper-masculine yuppie with a violent streak solidified the character’s place in pop culture. Directed by Mary Harron, the 2000 adaptation became a cult classic, featuring supporting performances by Willem Dafoe and Jared Leto.

This new adaptation, however, will diverge from its predecessor by reinterpreting the original novel rather than revisiting the prior film’s narrative. Luca Guadagnino, known for his visually arresting and emotionally charged storytelling, is expected to bring a more sensual and layered approach to the material.

The screenplay will be penned by Scott Z. Burns (The Laundromat), and the film will be produced by Frenesy Films. Sam Pressman, son of Edward R. Pressman—the producer of the original film—will serve as executive producer under Pressman Film.

“I always found in the best horror movies a very subversive, leftist tear-down-the-house quality that I always loved and it’s very dispiriting to see how contemporary horror went to the other side – it’s completely conservative, almost suffocatingly imposing a point of view that is sadistic.” -Luca Guadagnino on Horror movies

Guadagnino’s involvement suggests the adaptation will explore themes of privilege, masculinity, and identity with a sharper, more critical lens, potentially including queer undertones, a trademark that is well known of the director.

Why Is American Psycho So Important In Pop Culture

Despite initial controversy over its graphic content, American Psycho is celebrated as a biting critique of hypermasculinity and capitalist excess. The story dissects the layers of privilege that shield Patrick Bateman from consequences, enabling his destructive and hedonistic behavior.

The novel’s critique remains relevant, making it a fertile ground for a modern reinterpretation. Guadagnino’s version has the opportunity to expand on the book’s themes, offering a new perspective on Bateman’s character and his place in society.

While Jacob Elordi was initially rumored to land the role, Austin Butler ultimately secured the part. With his Oscar-nominated performance in Elvis proving his acting chops, Butler is poised to deliver a fresh take on the complex and chilling character.

Guadagnino’s vision promises to honor the essence of Ellis’ work while reimagining it for a contemporary audience. Whether it’s through a more erotic lens, as some speculate, or a deeper critique of societal structures, the new American Psycho aims to captivate audiences in a way that resonates with today’s cultural landscape.

Austin Butler has received 28 awards and has been nominated 76 times for his work in film and television. Some of his notable awards including an Oscar nomination, a Golden Globe Award on  Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama, and a BAFTA for Best Leading Actor, all for the movie ‘Elvis’.

Will he live up to Christian Bale’s iconic performance?
