Timothée Chalamet’s career is definitely going in the right direction. The young actor, who has just celebrated a successful release with a new version of Dune, is soon to be conquering our hearts as one of the most beloved literary characters in the prequel movie called Wonka. Today, the actor just shared some first glimpses of himself in full character and some of the aesthetics of the upcoming movie that will show us a younger version of Wonka before he opened his iconic factory.
Just a few days ago, Warner Bros. announced that the production of Wonka had started filming, and although we were all expecting to see Chalamet in full Willy Wonka glam, we didn’t think it would be that soon! Chalamet shared a photo wearing a look more similar to Gene Wilder’s version than the unique Tim Burton one played by Johnny Depp.

However, there are some differences, Wilder’s Wonka was characterized by the iconic combination of purple and green colors while Chalamet appears wearing a burgundy velvet coat with a rusty brown top hat. He also appears wearing a patterned earth-toned scarf that suggests that instead of going for extra colorful palettes as the two previous films did, this version will delve into darker hues, perhaps setting the tone of the entire story.
One thing to notice about the film is that for the first time, Wonka’s story won’t be precisely based on Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Instead, it will show us Wonka’s life before becoming the iconic candy maker we all love. Now, Tim Burton’s version already gave us a glimpse of Wonka’s origin story about him being the son of a harsh dentist father who wouldn’t let him eat candy, but it’s most likely this new movie won’t deal with anything like that and will give us a different, and slightly darker perspective.

The movie is being directed by Paul King, director of Paddington, who also co-wrote the screenplay of Wonka alongside Simon Farnaby. It’s also known that the cast will include the participation of the great Rowan Atkinson, Mathew Baynton, Jim Carter, Academy Award Winner Olivia Colman, Sally Hawkins, and Keegan-Michael Key.
Wonka is scheduled to be released next March 17, 2023.
