It’s finally here, the trailer for the anticipated sequel to the incredible post-apocalyptic zombie comedy that captured our hearts back in 2009. Get ready for Zombieland: Double Tap.
One thing stands out from the get-go: the original gang is back, albeit more mature and more badass than ever—if that was even possible. Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg, and Abigail Breslin reprise their iconic roles as Tallahassee, Wichita, Columbus and Little Rock respectively, and we couldn’t be more excited.
A proven team
The trailer doesn’t reveal much of the plot—which is good—, but it certainly doesn’t hold back in terms of over-the-top action, dramatic slow-mo’s, ridiculous antics, and sheer absurdity. In short, it seems we’re getting all that made the original Zombieland great, and then some. Whatever the first film did right, we might expect this one to do even better. That’s the hope, at least.
And it’s not a fool’s hope either. Another great sign is that Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer is back at the helm of the sequel, alongside the first film’s original writers, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. So, since the same crew from casting to writing is involved, we can actually expect Double Tap to stay true to the spirit and comedy that Zombieland is known for.
A plot unknown
“Through comic mayhem that stretches from the White House and through the heartland, these four slayers must face off against the many new kinds of zombies that have evolved since the first movie, as well as some new human survivors,” reads the description. “But most of all, they have to face the growing pains of their own snarky, makeshift family.”
Like with many zombie stories depicting veteran post-apocalyptic survivors, Zombieland 2 seems to be less about the zombies and more about the people, if the trailer is any indication. And that’s not at all a bad thing: it’s when interacting with other like-minded wanderers that these kinds of stories get the most interesting anyway. Double Tap appears to be taking this in a completely comedic direction, though, featuring a host of new characters each more absurdly odd than the last. We’ll have to wait a few more months to see how it all turns out.
The film will be distributed by Sony Pictures, and is set to premiere on October 8 this year.
