Steve Harwell‘s addictions ended his career and his life. Unfortunately, his farewell to the stage was not the best; in fact, we could say that it was the worst concert Smash Mouth. The founder of the group was struggling with his alcoholism and other afflictions it had already caused him; however, in 2021, it was more than evident that his health and state of mind had worsened.
Steve Harwell’s Last Show
Smash Mouth performed at the Big Sip beer and wine festival, held at the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts in Bethel, New York. His fans were concerned after seeing him on stage; he appeared disoriented, slurring his words and with an aggressive attitude towards his audience, making death threats on several occasions.
Unbeknownst to anyone, not even him, this show would mark his departure from Smash Mouth forever. He was not able to perform his best-known song, he was out of his mind. To one fan he said, “I’m going to kill your whole f***ing family, I swear.”
As if that wasn’t enough, some of the attendees shared other fragments of the concert, where they claim that Steve made a Nazi salute and then shouted to his followers: “Fuck you, bitches.” Fans were saddened and disappointed to see the former Smash Mouth vocalist, who died on September 4, 2023, in such conditions.
“I know the ethics of this aren’t too much (…) I just saw Smash Mouth play live at a local beer and wine festival. When I say it was the most chaotic show I’ve ever seen in my life… I have no words,” said one of the attendees.
Smash Mouth Apologized and Steve Announced His Retirement
After their embarrassing performance, as described by many fans, the band’s representatives apologized, highlighting the singer’s serious health.
“Steve has been dealing with long-term medical issues for the past eight years, and during his last concert at the Big Sip, he suffered several symptoms directly connected to his situation. As of today, Steve will be retiring from Smash Mouth to focus on his physical and mental health.”
And it was then that Steve pronounced what we didn’t want or imagine would happen so soon; he said goodbye to the stage and to the band he had been with for more than 20 years, and that made him one of the best musicians of that time, plus everyone would remember him for having been responsible for the soundtrack of Shrek.

“Ever since I was a kid, I dreamed of being a rock star playing in sold-out arenas, and I’ve been extremely lucky to be able to live that dream. To my bandmates, it’s been an honor to play with you all over the years, and I can’t think of anyone else I would have wanted to embark on this wild ride with (…) And to our loyal fans, thank you, it’s all been possible because of you. I have tried my hardest to overcome my physical and mental issues and play for you one last time, but I have not been able to (…) I can’t wait to see what Smash Mouth accomplishes in the future, and I look forward to counting myself as one of the band’s newest fans,” read a statement issued by TMZ on Steve’s behalf.
The band performed in 2022 at Corona Capital in Mexico, which planted hope among fans that Steve would return, but it didn’t happen… Smash Mouth appeared on stage but with Zach Goode as the new vocalist.
