Netflix’s new crime drama series Eric debuted on the streaming giant on May 31, captivating viewers with its gripping narrative. Starring Oscar nominee Benedict Cumberbatch, the six-episode limited series delves into the turbulent life of Vincent Anderson, a desperate father and alcoholic who runs a children’s television show called Good Day Sunshine in 1980s New York. As the story unfolds, many viewers wonder: is Eric based on a true story, and was Vincent Anderson a real person?

In Eric, Vincent Anderson (Cumberbatch) is a puppeteer whose life spirals into chaos after his 9-year-old son, Edgar, goes missing on his way to school. Struggling with his son’s disappearance, Vincent becomes increasingly anxious and unstable, clinging to his son’s drawings of a blue puppet named Eric. Convinced that getting Eric on TV will bring Edgar back, Vincent embarks on a harrowing journey through the vibrant, dangerous streets of ’80s New York. This quest leads him to alienate his family, coworkers, and the detectives trying to help him, as described on Netflix’s Tudum.
“This is a story about people finding their home,” Cumberbatch told the streamer. “Whether it’s a child, a homeless person, a gay Black cop, a wife in an unhappy marriage, or even Eric on the show, it’s all about finding a place.”
The Inspirations Behind Eric
Despite its realistic portrayal and emotional depth, Eric is not based on a single true story. Instead, the series is loosely inspired by multiple child disappearance cases that the show’s creator, Abi Morgan, heard about while growing up in the U.K.
“It [Eric] wasn’t based on any one story. If I’d wanted to do that, I would have gone deep into that story,” Morgan revealed to USA Today. “There were several children who disappeared. I wanted to create a kind of every child; the simple act of going out one day and not coming home felt very resonant.”
Morgan’s reflections on the show’s inspirations were echoed in an interview with RadioTimes.com, where she recalled being haunted by stories of missing children in the 1980s U.K. Additionally, her experience working as a nanny in New York during the mid-’80s, a time marked by the AIDS epidemic and widespread homophobia, influenced the show’s themes and setting.

To prepare for his role, Cumberbatch immersed himself in the world of puppeteering, drawing inspiration from legendary Muppets creator Jim Henson. “[Henson] started out with these late-night, very dark satirical skits that were adverts, and then turned to early childhood education,” he told Tudum. Cumberbatch appreciated the opportunity to learn puppetry, calling it a “privilege” to acquire such a unique skill for his storytelling.
Set against the backdrop of 1980s New York City, Eric not only explores the emotional turmoil of a father’s search for his missing son but also addresses broader social issues. The series highlights the AIDS epidemic, racism, poverty, and homophobia, providing a poignant commentary on the era’s societal challenges.
While Eric is not based on a single true story, it resonates with the real-life experiences of countless families who have faced the anguish of a missing child. Abi Morgan’s creation is a tribute to those stories, blending elements of historical truth with fictional narrative to create a powerful and emotionally charged series.
All six episodes of Eric are now streaming on Netflix. The series offers a deeply moving exploration of loss, resilience, and the quest for home in a world fraught with challenges, making it a must-watch for fans of psychological thrillers.
