Your child’s dream is about to come true! Barbie has become a true fashionista by being the main inspiration behind the new Balmain collection designed by the acclaimed Olivier Rousteing.
The French designer teamed up with Mattel’s Barbie to create a capsule collection inspired not only by the famous doll but also by her iconic pink color and the shades and tones it has.
The collection has 50 genderless pieces that go from broad-shouldered, sequined mini-dresses, strapless mermaid gowns, to silk satin suits, and doll-like pajama sets. All of course in different shades of pink such as baby pink, hot pink, and bubblegum pink.
Along with the collection, for the first time, Mattel and Balmain will start to participate in the metaverse through the online auction of three NFTs of some of the looks; each will come with a doll-size physical design.
Olivier Rousteing said to the New York Times that this collaboration is more of an emotional project than a commercial one, mainly because he grew up playing with Barbie dolls when he was a kid and feeling shameful for doing so.
“Having Barbie in my Balmain army, making a collection inspired by her where there are no boy clothes or girl clothes, is my small revenge. I think Barbie represents a joyful dream world. There’s nothing wrong with a dream. But let’s push the dream, and not the dream of the 1950s or 1960s, but 2022.”
The capsule collection will be available worldwide on January 13.
