I was born in the eighties. Hence I’ve been obsessed with hair removal methods since I was ten. I don’t think it was like this for previous generations. I mean, everyone has arm hair right? Then, during my teens, another part ended up becoming crucial: the one curiously called the bikini area. Like so many trends that have come and gone, the choice to use wax, tweezers, creams, razors, or laser to remove pubic hair has changed, as well as how much should be left or removed. Yet it’s only recently when several health professionals have issued serious warnings about having a Brazilian, landing strip, or whatever shape is in fashion now.
There are plenty of arguments against pubic hair removal, we’ll get to those in a bit. However, I think that the most important part is in regards to what makes you feel comfortable as well as what works best with your body. Before we list the different infections, STIs and discomfort that can arise from hair removal, we should clarify that there is no rule about it. If you want to go for a full bush, you should. If you only want to trim the hair that reaches your thighs, again, that’s your call. Whether you get a regular bikini, high bikini, landing strip, triangle, heart, or Brazilian on you is your decision. Don’t go for whatever trend is going around. Choose what you are happy and comfortable with.
The skin around the labia, as well as the skin of your labia and vulva, is understandably sensitive. So any attempt at hair removal is likely to cause some irritation. That’s why finding the right place to go in for a wax or laser is important. Make sure they meet the standards of the department of health. You definitely don’t want to be stingy on this. Spas or salons that double-dip in the pot of wax, don’t change the bed sheet after each client, or don’t sanitize their tools are a big warning sign. You don’t need to spend a lot of money, but you do need to make sure of hygiene. One way of getting a professional wax that won’t break the bank is by going to a beauty school.
But let’s get to the risks. Obviously, since your skin will be vulnerable, specially with wax removal, there’s more chance for bacteria, virus, and parasites to attack it. Here are the possible effects to hair removal gone wrong:
Ingrown Hairs
Caused by razors, wax, or creams, these will be the least of your problems. Yet they’re still pretty annoying, unsightly, and, at times, painful. However, there are plenty of creams and toners that can help avoid them. Keeping the area clean is imperative to avoid these.
Burns
Both the wax and laser come with the risk for skin burns. This is why you need to invest time in finding the right place to get this done.
Vulvar and vaginal irritation
Every body is different. Some people have no issue post-hair removal. But others might be prone to particular infections and conditions, such as vaginitis or thrush. If you start feeling any discomfort or itching, you might want to go get checked out by your sexual health professional.
Folliculitis
These are similar to ingrown hairs. However, in this case, the follicle is what’s infected. Waxing is the main culprit behind this because it strips out the hair from the root, at times affecting the follicle. These will look like little pimples but don’t squeeze them. Instead keep the area clean. Because of the natural moisture of the area, bacteria are likely to flourish easier. Yet keeping it clean and dry will help.
STIs and STDs
It’s not that simply having pubic hair will protect you from getting these. It won’t. A common misconception is to consider that the lack of hair will make you more vulnerable to contracting virus, bacteria, or parasites. However, most of the risk happens at the beauty salon or spa. If the tools, sheet, or even your aesthetician are not following the best hygiene practices you’ll be at risk. Because you never know who was getting their Brazilian before you. If your immune system is compromised, you probably should check with your doctor prior to making your hair removal appointment.
Ultimately, any route, style, or method you choose will come with some research and aftercare to avoid any of these happening, or at least keeping them in check.
