In the history of fashion, there are very few iconic perfumes that have prevailed over the years, one of them is certainly Chanel No. 5 that has 100 years in the market, and Angel, created by Thierry Mugler and even though is more recent, it has become an iconic scent and one of the world’s best selling perfumes in the world.

But, why it has become so important? This is the story of this iconic perfume made by French designer Thierry Mugler who passed away this January 23 at 73 years old.

Angel, an aroma for foodies

The perfume was launched in 1992 and it became an instant hit for one of its main characteristics: it was the first gourmand fragrance. What is this? For the first time, it gets rid of the flower scents to create its bouquet and rather focused on aromas from raw materials like patchouli, praline, red berries, and vanilla.

It was created by perfumiers Olivier Cresp and Yves de Chirin keeping it mind it needed to be totally different from other fragrances. The result was an intriguing perfume with high concentrations of patchouli that makes some love it and others totally hate it.

In fact, the Perfume Academy highlighted in 2021 the historical importance of Angel. “It started the gourmand perfumery, a very innovative fragrance for not having a flower note and rather using a gourmand praline note […] It is wild in its concept, the feminine perfumery of the last 40 years could not be explained without it, it is the history of perfumery”.

It has a unique refillable bottle

Not only Angel change the way we think about perfumes, but also it was the first to offer a refill as a way to help the environment, start the trend of sustainable luxury, and stop throwing away beautifully designed crystal bottles. Which is another of its very interesting features.

Its irregular star-shaped bottle was designed for no other than Mugler himself. For the final bottle, nearly 1,000 tests were carried by Brosse master glassmakers.

Nowadays, Angel by Mugler is the best-selling perfume in Europe and one of the most important around the globe.
