When you’re searching for outfit inspiration, your grandma is probably the last person to come to mind, especially if you believe her sense of fashion is outdated. However, if you think about it for a second, vintage clothes are super trendy right now, and it’s pretty likely that we love vintage so much because it makes us nostalgic and reminds us of the way our grannies used to dress or even on the clothes they still wear. So, instead of scrolling on your favorite social media for clothes and tips to revamp your look, why not pay a visit to your grandma and ask her for tips? After all, no one knows classic better than your granny. Here are some of the best tips we can learn from our grandmas to create timeless and beautiful looks.
1. Always wear some jewelry
One time, my grandma told me, “I never go out without my earrings. I feel like I’m naked without them.” Although this advice is not to be taken literally, its core meaning is something we should all consider when we’re choosing our outfits. Earrings, a necklace, some bracelets, or even a ring, help add a touch of classy elegance and sophistication that can highlight a part of your body or balance out the whole look. Of course, like with any other accessory, don’t overdo it, and see which pieces go best with the clothes you’re wearing.
2. Keep your red lipstick on hand
Red lipstick has crossed over from our grandmas’ generation –and even earlier than that– into our own because of its capability to adapt to new make up trends. Red will always be in because it’s lively, vibrant, and sexy. The best part of all: it looks good on all skin colors: the only thing you have to do is find the right tone for you. Even better, why not wear an outfit that also highlights the color of your lips?
3. Bring a sweater with you
Grandmas always scold us when we’re not wearing anything to cover ourselves, even when it’s not cold out. Although the only thing they want is to keep us from freezing or catching a cold, sweaters, coats, cardigans, and jackets can be a great addition to our outfit. Think of them not as something you’re wearing only to protect yourself from the elements, but as a piece that complements the color palette and overall look of your outfit. You’ll probably take it off once you’re indoors, so it doesn’t have to be the main piece. However, a chic sweater that enhances the rest of your clothes will always be an excellent way to shake up your everyday look.
4. Pamper your skin
I don’t know how it happens, but most grandmas are equipped with infinite knowledge about home remedies and DIY beauty routines to take care of your skin. Maybe it’s because when they were young, they didn’t have the internet to search for the millions of routines we can find nowadays, so, instead, they had to recur either to remedies they’d heard of from their friends and family or trial and error with things they had at home. Whether it’s a simple avocado mask or something a little bit more elaborate, you can always count on these homemade treatments to pamper your skin and treat yourself. Also, protect your skin from UV rays, or as my grandma says, stay out of the sun. Although sunscreen is the best way to do it, wearing a hat is also pretty helpful.
5. Pantyhose always come in handy
Pantyhose might seem too old-fashioned for modern outfits, especially if they’re nude. However, you can give a twist to this piece and choose other colors, such as black, brown, or red. To do so, make sure they match the rest of your outfit, including your shoes, and that they aren’t ripped. Otherwise, it can turn an elegant outfit into a shabby attempt to achieve one. The best thing about wearing these type of tights is that they enhance the shape of your legs, making them look more toned.
6. Look good and feel good
Last but not least, your granny will never let you leave the house looking like a mess. Part of our well-being includes feeling good about ourselves and our appearance, so one of the best ways our grandmas look after us is by telling us to have a neat style. These tiny details can be make the difference between a fashionable yet carefree look, or a chic and fresh image. Besides, when you feel good about what you’re wearing, that comfort is reflected in your overall look.
