What a time to be alive! Fast food fried chicken chains are on a mother flippin’ role. Last week, Popeye declared war on Chick-a-fil by stepping on their chicken sandwich turf. But it’s Kentucky Fried Chicken who is always pushing its envelope, and this time they really outdid themselves. What’s crazier than two patties made of chicken? Two patties made out of something that isn’t chicken at all! KFC, the now revolutionary force grabbing the chicken world by storm, partnered up with Beyond Meat to offer plant-based chicken nuggets. The first nuggets are expected to go on sale for one day only in Smyrna, Georgia, on August 27, 2019—a day that will forever live in fame.

“KFC is an iconic part of American culture and a brand that I, like so many consumers, grew up with. To be able to bring Beyond Fried Chicken, in all of its KFC-inspired deliciousness to market, speaks to our collective ability to meet the consumer where they are and accompany them on their journey. My only regret is not being able to see the legendary Colonel himself enjoy this important moment,” said Ethan Brown, founder and CEO of Beyond Meat.

KFC began flirting with vegetarian options back when they offered the “Impostor burger” in the UK, which consisted in a patty processed to resemble a chicken breast, its signature “secret” flavor, a lettuce top, vegan mayonnaise, and no fake cheese. KFC’s announcement comes in the context of fast food chains like Burger King updating their menu to include more plant-based food, catering to an increasingly vegetarian food market.
