In a surprise announcement via social media, girl’s education activist and Nobel Prize winner Malala Yousafzai said she got married in a private and intimate nikkah ceremony.
“Today marks a precious day in my life. Asser and I tied the knot to be partners for life”, she wrote on Instagram and Twitter.
According to the University of Oxford graduate, she celebrated a muslim ceremony at her home in Birmingham, United Kingdom.
“We are excited to walk together for the journey ahead”, wrote in the caption that came with the pictures of the happy couple.
Her now husband, Asser Malik is the General Manager of High Performance for the Pakistan Cricket Board, according to his LinkedIn page.
What does Malala think of marriage?
The activist for girl’s right to education once said to British Vogue in 2021 that she didn’t understand why people would want to get married.
“If you want to have a person in your life, why do you have to sign marriage papers, why can’t it just be a partnership? My mum is like… ‘Don’t you dare say anything like that! You have to get married, marriage is beautiful”, she said back then.

She even confessed that she never really thought of getting married or having a family, but it all changed as she saw her college friends settling down.
“I just thought, ‘I’m never going to get married, never going to have kids – just going to do my work. I’m going to be happy and live with my family forever. I didn’t realise that you’re not the same person all the time,” she continued. “You change as well and you’re growing.”
Now we see that she decided to change her mind completely.
