Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex is to receive just £1 in damages from the Mail on Sunday after a judge ruled out that the media outlet invaded her privacy by publishing a private letter she sent to her father.
According to a report from The Guardian, the sum is set out in court documents that also show that the media outlet will have to pay an unspecified sum for the infringing copyright of Meghan’s letter and another confidential sum in damages for copyright infringement.
The Mail on Sunday might as well cover Meghan’s costs that could be more than £1m.
When the case began three years ago, the Duchess said that she wasn’t looking for money, but rather a restoration of values of privacy.
A spokesperson described the undisclosed payments as substantial and that they would be donated to charity.
As part of the court settlement, the Mail outlets have to avoid disclosing the names of five of Meghan’s friends who anonymously spoke to People magazine for a 2018 article about the royal.
While the MailOnline was ordered to carry front page and home declarations saying they had lost the legal case.
