What Is The Pink Moon And When Can We See It?

April might be the cruelest month, but at least it gives us a celestial spectacle. I’m talking about the Pink Moon, also called the April Moon, also called the April Pink Moon, which we can expect to fully see on April 7th. But what is the Pink Moon, really, and most importantly, when is the best time to get out there and photograph it?

What Is A Pink Moon, anyway?

In short, the pink moon is simply a full moon in April.

Is the Pink Moon pink?

There are full moons, blue moons, white moons, blood moons, so thank the Universe for giving us a pink one. Right? Wrong! Turns out the pink Moon isn’t actually pink (damn you, Universe!). We call it that after the flowers that bloom during April, the ground phlox or creeper phlox type of wildflower, which opens small, pink flowers this month. In terms of color, the pink moon is really just another run-of-the-mill full moon. However, it will probably appear to be yellow, orange, golden or all of the above, when it approaches the horizon. Then, it’ll move towards a whitish shine as it moves higher on the sky.

What Time Will I Be Able To See the Pink Moon?

Just to give you an idea, here are several timeframes of different cities across the United States.

The exact time of the full Pink Moon worldwide will happen on the morning of April 7 at 10:35 pm ET. That’s the time when the April moon is said to be officially full.
