No matter how cynical we might think we are, we all long for a “happily-ever-after” kind of relationship. We would like to spend our lives next to a person with whom every day is the perfect day. One in which time stands still and the only thing that matters is both of you sharing a moment together. Yeah, that might not be something that happens in real life, but it might be true that there’s one person who’s perfect for us, even if we don’t end up with them after all.
Love can be impossible to explain with words, but we know perfectly how it feels (and how it can hurt). So, while we can’t really explain it as a whole, we can definitely describe some of its peculiarities. Having said that, there are some signs that could tell us if we’ve found that ideal person in our life; that person we love calling The One, or in even cheesier terms, the love of our lives.
So, if you’re in a relationship and wish to know if that person you’re sharing your life with is perfect for you, you should consider these signs.
1. They always find time to be with you
It doesn’t matter if they have a tight schedule or so much on their plate, if they’re really for you, they will always find some time to share with you and will make you a priority. It doesn’t matter if it’s not a lot of time because you know that at the end of the day, those moments together are special and meaningful.
2. Communication is great
Having good communication isn’t just being able to talk about everything, from random subjects to really intense and deep matters. Actually, good communication in a relationship is actually being mature enough to talk and discuss where you’re going and the path you want to take as a couple. Oh, and yes, it also involves talking about sex.
3. You value each other’s privacy
Being in a relationship doesn’t mean that now everything is about you as a couple or that your whole life should revolve around the other person. A relationship is all about the union of two paths that run parallel to each other, not become one. So, keeping your own activities, hobbies, and relationships (family and friends) isn’t only advisable, but crucial.
4. Trust is key
This one goes hand in hand with the previous point: a healthy relationship must be based on trust, and having your own space and actually enjoying it depends on how much you trust each other.
5. They have the ability to brighten your day
We all have bad days where we don’t want to know anything about anyone. But there’s always that person who can make everything better with just a text, a photo, a meme, or a phone call. That’s when you get to know if that person is the one, when no matter what, their presence makes you feel better just like that.
6. Your intimacy goes beyond mere sex
Though for many, sex is the culmination of love, it goes beyond getting naked and jumping into bed, it’s all about intimacy. Knowing your partner perfectly and knowing their deepest fears and passions; being able to talk about them openly; being able to make them shiver just by being there. That’s it.
7. They’ll encourage you to be your best self
People always say that if someone truly loves you, they won’t try to change you, but it goes beyond that: while it’s true that love is all about accepting the other for who they are, that doesn’t mean you have to practice blind tolerance. Here’s where communication becomes key: being comfortable enough to tell them what they can improve. It’s not about changing them, but rather encouraging them to become their best self.
8. They’ll support and help you reach your goals
There’s nothing less encouraging in a relationship than feeling you’re stuck with someone who’s holding you back. True love is all about helping each other follow the life paths both have chosen. If you don’t see your relationship as a safe support system, then you have to reconsider if you’re in the right place.
