By Taps Murove, Citizen of The Good Country

Taps Murove is a programmer originally from Harare, Zimbabwe, and the creator of the Litern App. He became interested in The Good Country Project after reading a piece on BBC News, and what caught his attention was the idea of a country with no borders. He agreed to talk to us about his motivations and his experience as a citizen of this brand new initiative and kindly answered a few questions for our readers.

How did you find The Good Country?

I came across a brief interview about Good Country on the BBC News website. I usually browse the site for interesting pieces of news, and the headline for the interview was “Good Country: The new virtual country with no borders.” That immediately drew my attention.

What moved you to request affiliation with the project?

Through my own experiences, I’ve come to the conclusion that while many of the benefits we enjoy in society come from the state structures that we’ve created, our inability to address many of the challenges that we now face also comes from the same source. We have created these structures called countries with varying levels of success, but in many cases, we are now restricted to what we can do by them.

In a way, we’re reaching a point where we will soon outgrow them and no one has seriously asked the question, “What comes next?”. What societal structures do we need to create to step into the next level of human growth and development? Good Country is not only interested in this question, it’s gone ahead and created a possible solution. A nation that has no borders and is based on a simple on ideology: it’s in the best interest of countries to be good. Not in a traditional moral sense, but in the sense of acting in a way that creates benefits for all. I found that very compelling.

What are the things you hope to achieve as a citizen of The Good Country?

I see Good Country as a path to be explored, and, at this point, the question is, “do people want to be part of this kind of country?” I don’t say this from a skeptical point of view, but I’m looking at it from a “start-up” perspective. I see Good Country as being in the validation stage, and trying to better understand the people who feel drawn to this kind of model, so it can reach them more effectively.

Are there any particular aspects that attract you and that you want to get more involved with?

My personal motivation is to create and participate in systems that benefit people. As to what that will practically look like, that’s still to be explored, and I expect that all Good Country citizens will have an opportunity to feed into that process.

How do you picture it, if it were a physical place?

To be honest, I don’t picture it as a physical place at all. Instead, I picture it was a group of people with different religions, ethnicities, cultures, and dreams, but all with the single desire to make the world a better place.
