I’m running, but I don’t really know why. I feel the anxiety mounting and I don’t have the strength to look back and see what’s chasing me. I am still running and I don’t feel tired at all. The anxiety is gnawing at me and I know I have no choice, I must look back. I gather what little courage I have left and I slowly turn my heard…Oh my God! It’s a killer clown! No, wait, is it a lion? Dear lord, it’s a gorilla! Wait, what’s a gorilla doing in the city? Seriously? Nah! Look again… Ooh, actually it’s Ms. Johnson, my elementary school teacher. Is she threatening to fail me again?
It doesn’t matter, keep running! Hold on! If I run fast enough I’ll be able to fly.
I begin to soar and Ms Johnson becomes a small dot in the far distance. As the wind rushes and my eyes begin to water from the speed, I realize something’s wrong, I’m falling, too fast actually. I crash and everything becomes dark, as I pat the floor around me, I touch something. Is that a… tooth? Oh my God, did I land on my face? Not really. Then, why are all my teeth falling? As I pick them up like marbles in a playground I see someone in the distance walking towards me. Who’s it? Oh, please no. What’s he doing here? I haven’t seen him since we broke up, and now he shows up on the worst day of my life? “Hi! Are you ok?”, he asks. “Why are you naked?”

I think I managed to collect the most common dreams we’ve all had at least once in our life. But what’s the meaning behind them? According to Patrick McNamara Ph.D., dreams don’t have a fixed meaning at all, or at least there’s not a universal meaning behind them. While there are common patterns, each dream actually reflects something about ourselves, or better said, about our unconscious. It can reflect unsolved issues in our mind, like a fear or a wish. Dreams could mean everything, but they’re not something we can interpret with complete certainty. So, no, that person who died in your dream is not getting married. Then, what does dreaming about your ex mean?

One of the simplest explanations is that you were reminded of them at some point in your day. While we can’t decide what information is relevant and which one is not, our brain holds onto it just in case you might need it later on. So, if you’ve dreamt about your ex, perhaps you saw something during the day that reminded you of them, which is why they pop up in your dreams.

Another possibility is that you’re not dreaming about that person, but actually about what they represented in your life. So that person is a metaphor of something deeper. Let’s say you’ve been thinking about going somewhere or doing something in particular and you associate those activities with them. The presence of your ex in your dreams doesn’t mean you still have feelings for them. And no, it’s not a cosmic sign of the universe telling you to contact them. It might be just a simple mental association.

One important thing to bear in mind is the way things ended between you. The unconscious associations in your mind depend on the way it all happened. For instance, if there wasn’t really any closure, your mind might be telling you that you have to overcome that. If, on the contrary, things ended on really good terms, you might associate happy memories or moments of your life with that person. I mean, the possibilities are endless.

As McNamara mentions, every dream has a connection with the self and represents something about ourselves. You don’t need a dream dictionary to get answers. Interpreting dreams is a matter of introspection that no guide or random “dream interpreter” can decipher. So, next time your ex makes a cameo in your dreams, instead of freaking out, think about other elements of the dream and why you think your mind brought that person back.
