Through her Instagram account, Dorfman also communicated this to her followers: “I am especially grateful to all the trans people who walked this path, broke barriers, and risked their lives to live authentically and radically as themselves before me. Thank you to all the trans women who showed me who I am, how to live, celebrate myself and take up space in this world.”
She clarified that she will not change her name from Tommy Dorfman: “I will not change my name. I was named after my mother’s brother, who passed away a month after I was born, and I feel very connected to that name, to an uncle who held me as he was dying.”
“With this medical transition, there has been discourse about my body, and it began to feel overwhelming. So, recently I looked to examples of others who have come out as trans. There’s the version I couldn’t really afford to do, which is to disappear for two years and come back with a new name, new face, and new body. But that’s not what I wanted. I’m thinking about how I can bring my trans body into television and film,” the actress said.
“One doesn’t have to medically transition to be trans, but for me, it was an active choice. I’m aligning my body with my soul. However, as a result of that, I’m losing some things. I have to acknowledge the fact that I brought a lot of people and things that might not be there at this part of my journey. All I can do now is look forward to a future where I am, hopefully, radically honest. That’s the person I’m becoming,” asserted Tommy Dorfman.
Finally, the star confirmed that she will have her first female role in Lena Dunham’s new film: “It’s crazy being 29 and going through puberty again. I feel like I’m 14.”
