Awards season is here! The 2019 Golden Globes ceremony came and went with a few surprises and snubs on Sunday night. I would like to list what I think were the five most jaw-dropping moments:

1. A Star is Born Dead…?

Remember a few months ago when all we could talk about was how good A Star is Born was? Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga must’ve felt at the top of the world with the glowing reviews and Oscar predictions. But, at the Golden Globes, at least, the movie turned out to be a big flop. Other than winning for Best Original Song (“Shallow”), it was overlooked in every other category it was nominated for… and it was nominated for plenty of awards.

2. Carol Burnett’s pact with the devil

Steve Carell presented the Carol Burnett Award to, well, Carol Burnett. I was shocked because she went up onstage looking at least 20 years younger than she actually is. I was watching with my uncle, and he said: “Wait… Carol Burnett is still alive?” I don’t know if anyone ever said that money can’t buy youth, but if they did, they were wrong. Dick Van Dyke showed up later walking with a cane, and joked about her being the only person he knew at the event.

3. Alfonso Cuarón’s big win

He has all the merit in the world, and he did a fantastic job with Roma, but I’ve always thought of these award ceremonies to be biased, and not very objective. So, it came as a surprise that he won Best Director, given that for the past few years, Mexican filmmakers have won big, and that could annoy more than one conservative American. I am glad Cuarón took the Golden Globe home; it kind of restores a little bit of faith in the judges.

4. Black Panther’s nomination

We knew who the nominees were weeks ago, but it still surprised me to see a Marvel superhero movie being called along with the nominees for Best Picture Drama. Now, this item on the list kind of contradicts the last one because having another picture with an almost entirely African-American cast in the list of contenders seems like a great opportunity to appear inclusive and make everyone happy. The movie is good, but no matter how much you like to say “Wakanda forever,” it isn’t THAT good.

5. Christian Bale’s AMAZING speech

The actor delivered what was probably the most satisfying moment of the evening with a great dose of irony. He won for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical for his performance as former Vice President Dick Cheney. And he thanked Satan for giving him the necessary inspiration to take on this particular role. I can’t wait to watch this movie!

There you have it. To me, those were the highlights of the ceremony. Which ones stood out to you?
