Sorry, but we have to address the elephant in the room. And be aware that this piece contains spoilers from ‘And just like that…’ first episode, so if you haven’t watched it, get ready. Carrie could have called 911 and saved us lots of drama, and of course, Mr. Big’s life.
In the first episode of the new Sex & the City series, we end up with very unfortunate news: Mr. Big died from a heart attack while Carrie hold him in her arms, under the shower. But before this happened, both stared for at least 10 seconds, a time that certainly Carrie could have used to call 911, request for an ambulance, and assist Mr. Big.
According to Daniel Luger, a cardiologist at Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center who talked to Vulture, Carrie should have called an ambulance and done some PCR to save Mr. Big’s life, instead of just lying under the shower, crying and holding him.
The cardiologist explained that it is possible to have a heart attack for as long as the estimated 30 minutes Carrie took from getting to Manhattan School of Music where she was at Charlotte’s daughter’s piano recital, to the 15th-floor penthouse she and Mr. Big live in at 1010 Fifth Avenue.
Moreover, he said that it was not the continuous exercise Mr. Big did at Peloton, but rather his lifestyle and medical records that caused the heart attack.
“Exercise itself does not cause an event. What caused him to have an event is that he had poorly controlled cholesterol, poorly controlled blood pressure, he was clearly using tobacco, and he has a history of coronary disease. All of his risk factors for a coronary disease should have been aggressively modified in order to prevent an event”, he said to Vulture.
Finally, the expert explained that it was Carrie’s fault because she had time to react and start CPR while waiting for an ambulance to resuscitate Mr. Big. The key was reactive the heart with chest compressions and prevent the brain to lack oxygen –it can survive up to three minutes without it, as well as to stop the blockage in the heart’s arteries.
“If you see somebody lose consciousness, the first thing you do is feel for a pulse. If there’s no pulse, you call EMS and start chest compressions without delay. You can definitely save people’s lives that way. He didn’t need to die”, he said.
So, yes. Carrie could have saved Mr. Big, but maybe it didn’t bring enough drama to the series, right?
