Charlie’s Angels fans around the world can rejoice, as Sony Pictures has just released the new trailer for the upcoming film, featuring a badass brand-new cast that includes Kristen Stewart (the Twilight Saga), Naomi Scott (Aladdin) and Ella Balinska (A Modern Tale) as the world-famous Angels.
The cast
The trailer shows great-looking action sequences and what appears to be an exciting storyline that fits right in with what fans have come to expect from a Charlie’s Angels movie. All three protagonists look as awesome as ever, promising to be worthy additions to the canon.
Elizabeth Banks leads the project as writer and director. She will also be appearing as one of the four Bosleys (a general code-name for the Angels’ many sidekicks), together with Sam Claflin (The Hunger Games), Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond), and Sir Patrick Stewart (the X-Men franchise). Additional supporting cast includes Noah Centineo, Nat Faxon, and Jonathan Tucker. So, that’s all pretty awesome and, at the very least, we know the fans are covered cast-wise.

The plot
As for the film’s plot, here’s the official synopsis:
“Charlie’s Angels have always provided security and investigative skills to private clients, and now the Townsend Agency has expanded internationally with multiple teams of Angels guided by multiple Bosleys taking on the toughest jobs across the world. When a young systems engineer blows the whistle on a dangerous technology, these Angels are called into action, putting their lives on the line to protect us all.”
It’s been a long time
Audiences have been waiting for a new iteration of Charlie’s Angels for more than 16 years, and the upcoming film is bound to introduce new generations to the fascinating world of the beloved butt-kicking Angels that first captivated the world over 40 years ago with the original TV show of the same name. Bear in mind that the last time Charlie’s Angels appeared on the big screen was in 2003, with Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, starring Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu.
Banks recently said this new movie will be neither a remake nor an actual reboot of the franchise. Instead, the film’s plot will occur in the same universe as the one established by Diaz, Barrymore, and Liu, and will serve as a sequel to their movies as well as to the original TV series. This of course leaves the door wide open for cameos.
An empowering franchise
Charlie’s Angels has always been about empowering women—though usually with some unfortunate concessions. Sure, the old TV show and movie franchise depicted badass women that went around beating men at their own game, but also objectified the protagonists with gratuitous sexual innuendos and shots. This time around, it seems that though all the fun, action, and sensuality remains untouched, the franchise has become even more aware and respectful of the social issues we face, introducing far more diversity than ever before, and featuring less gratuitously-sexualizing outfits all around. That’s just based on the trailer, of course—we’re yet to see how the actual film turns out. But if Elizabeth Bank’s social commitment to the cause is any indication, we have good reason to be optimistic.
In any case, one thing’s certain: Sony Pictures is going all in with this one, playing the powerhouse card even when it comes to the film’s music, as they incorporated the big names of Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, and Lana Del Rey in an unprecedented collaboration for the theme song.
Charlie’s Angels is coming out on November 15, 2019, so there’s only a few months to go until we finally see the most beloved female trio back on the big screen. It’s been a long time coming.
