You meet the most perfect person in the world. You both are passionate about the same things, you have a blast every time you see each other, but there’s a problem: that person is with someone and doesn’t see you that way. Quite common, isn’t it? Set in a small village in Italy, the movie tells the story of Elio, a teenager whose sexuality is awakened when Oliver (an older graduate student) comes to his house to spend the summer working with his father. This movie was very acclaimed last year thanks to its complex, yet relaxed way of tackling the coming-of-age subject.

For me, anything with Steve Carell is an absolute glory, but this film, in particular, had it all to become an instant classic. I mean, it’s the story of a recently divorced guy dragged into the complex world of dating by an expert on the subject, who ends up falling for a girl who challenges him emotionally. Besides, the wonderful onscreen couple Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone raises the bar so high.
La La Land (2016) Dir. Damien Chazelle
And following the star couple, we have the film that revolutionized musicals with a very simple yet well-developed story. A jazz pianist and an aspiring actress meet and fall in love in the iconic city of Los Angeles, while both try to succeed in their careers. Seriously, words don’t do justice to the film.
Blue Is the Warmest Color (2013) Dir. Abdellatif Kechiche
As the winner of that year’s Palme d’Or, this touching coming-of-age movie tells the story of Adèle, a teenager who gets a huge crush on a young woman with blue hair she sees walking down the street. Eventually, they meet and start a passionate relationship, even though they have nothing in common but their feelings.
Love is an universal emotion that has always inspired the best stories. However, even though we already have great classics, sometimes we need something that speaks to us and our current anxieties and feelings. Moreover, the way we relate to people and do relationships, in general, has evolved so much that new films have to deal with these changes. That’s why it doesn’t matter if they’re too recent, they automatically become classics exploring how love is understood today.
