6 Romantic Movies From The 2010s We Can Say Are Already Classics

Who doesn’t love a good romantic comedy? Even if it’s not your favorite genre, sometimes they can be the perfect stories to chill out a bit and clear our minds from everything happening in our lives. However, no matter how much we love the great romantic classics, there comes a time when we can no longer relate to the stories portrayed, merely because they don’t speak to our current reality. Yes, we love watching 10 Things I Hate About You, Bridget Jones’ Diary, and The Notebook over and over again, but sometimes, what we need is a story that somehow reflects how we’re feeling or even that romantic fantasy we have, and falling in love with a guy at the local fair (like Noah and Allie) isn’t really going to happen, is it? That’s why today we’re going to talk about those recent romantic films that aren’t just relatable, but also, thanks to their take on love, they’ve become instant classics. So, without further ado, let’s take a look at these classics from the 2010s.

Crazy Rich Asians (2018) Dir. Jon M. Chu

Meeting your in-laws can be one of the most challenging milestones in a relationship. Now, realizing that they’re actually one of the richest families in their country, who also believe you’re not enough for their son, can make things even more complicated. About to be released soon, this film is one of the most expected ones of the year and promises to become an instant classic.

The F Word (2014) Dir. Michael Dowse

You meet the most perfect person in the world. You both are passionate about the same things, you have a blast every time you see each other, but there’s a problem: that person is with someone and doesn’t see you that way. Quite common, isn’t it? Well, not really for the couple in the movie, starring Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan.

Call Me by Your Name (2017) Dir. Luca Guadagnino

Set in a small village in Italy, the movie tells the story of Elio, a teenager whose sexuality is awakened when Oliver (an older graduate student) comes to his house to spend the summer working with his father. This movie was very acclaimed last year thanks to its complex, yet relaxed way of tackling the coming-of-age subject.

Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011) Dir. Glenn Ficarra and John Requa

For me, anything with Steve Carell is an absolute glory, but this film, in particular, had it all to become an instant classic. I mean, it’s the story of a recently divorced guy dragged into the complex world of dating by an expert on the subject, who ends up falling for a girl who challenges him emotionally. Besides, the wonderful onscreen couple Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone raises the bar so high.

La La Land (2016) Dir. Damien Chazelle

And following the star couple, we have the film that revolutionized musicals with a very simple yet well-developed story. A jazz pianist and an aspiring actress meet and fall in love in the iconic city of Los Angeles, while both try to succeed in their careers. Seriously, words don’t do justice to the film.

Blue Is the Warmest Color (2013) Dir. Abdellatif Kechiche

As the winner of that year’s Palme d’Or, this touching coming-of-age movie tells the story of Adèle, a teenager who gets a huge crush on a young woman with blue hair she sees walking down the street. Eventually, they meet and start a passionate relationship, even though they have nothing in common but their feelings.

Love is an universal emotion that has always inspired the best stories. However, even though we already have great classics, sometimes we need something that speaks to us and our current anxieties and feelings. Moreover, the way we relate to people and do relationships, in general, has evolved so much that new films have to deal with these changes. That’s why it doesn’t matter if they’re too recent, they automatically become classics exploring how love is understood today.
