Game of Thrones will probably follow in the footsteps of many previous successful franchises in that it will keep on going until they just can’t get any more out of it. At least it seems that way after producers officially announced a new documentary: Game of Thrones: The Last Watch, which will air on May 26 at 9 p.m., just a week after the series’ finale.
The documentary will follow the cast and crew, and show us an in-depth look at behind the scenes of the eighth and final season’s filming and production—the most complex, expensive, and impressive of them all.

The person in charge of putting everything together for this new documentary was English artist and filmmaker Jeanie Finlay, who, for two hours of dedicated footage, shows us exclusive interviews and several testimonies regarding the challenges, difficulties, and overall joys the production team faced during filming—including struggling against harsh weather and inhospitable locations.
According to HBO, the format is not so much a trip behind the camera, but rather a kind of homage to George R.R. Martin’s brilliant story, and a farewell from the whole crew and cast.

“Game of Thrones: The Last Watch delves deep into the mud and blood to reveal the tears and triumphs involved in the challenge of bringing the fantasy world of Westeros to life in the very real studios, fields and car-parks of Northern Ireland,” reads HBO’s press release.
“Made with unprecedented access,” the announcement continues:
“Game of Thrones: The Last Watch is an up-close and personal report from the trenches of production, following the crew and the cast as they contend with extreme weather, punishing deadlines and an ever-excited fandom hungry for spoilers. Much more than a ‘making of’ documentary, this is a funny, heartbreaking story, told with wit and intimacy, about the bittersweet pleasures of what it means to create a world—and then have to say goodbye to it.”
With Game of Thrones: The Last Watch, we too shall get a chance to say goodbye—if, after all these years, we can bring ourselves to do so.
