We all know that Lady Gaga is one of the most talented performers of her generation. Proof of this are her countless awards, to which she recently added another Golden Globe for Best Original Song. She’s simply an amazing and iconic artist, but could she really be the best actress of the year? Did the Hollywood Foreign Press make a mistake by not handing her the coveted award for Best Actress in Motion Picture – Drama? Did she live up to veteran actresses like Nicole Kidman, or movie legends such as Glenn Close? I’m afraid I don’t think so, because greatness comes with time.

I was very excited to see A Star Is Born (2018) to witness her fulfilling her dream of being onscreen for the very first time. I was one of those viewers that encouraged everyone to see it, since her portrayal of Ally, though conveniently resembling her own career, would earn her the respect of the critics for her craft as actor. I even stated that to reduce her performance to a rehashing of her career and personal life would be unfair to the work she did as an actor. Still, though this has been Gaga’s first performance on film, and one that captivated the fans and the public in general, it’s simply not the best performance of the year.
Her creativity and hard work as an artist can be perceived throughout A Star Is Born, and it was a great cinematic debut for Lady Gaga. Without a doubt, her performance was great: smart, moving, elegant, and subtle yet powerful. But this is a competition, and she lost with good reason. It was a disadvantage that a newcomer on film would have to compete against such heavyweights like Glenn Close and Nicole Kidman, the first being a legend in movies along with Meryl Streep, and the latter, one of Hollywood’s finest actresses who gave one of the greatest performances of her career.

Gaga is a tour de force on the screen, in the studio, onstage, and basically, everywhere she goes. However, she needs more time and more opportunities to play new, different, and challenging characters, as it’s happened with Glenn Close who was awarded Best Actress in Drama (and a well-deserved award for her performance in The Wife). Lady Gaga wears the crown as one of the most important pop figures of the last decade, her talent is undeniable, and there’s no doubt of her abilities as a performer. Still, she’s not suitable for the title of “best” actress, at least not yet.
Giving her such an award could jeopardize her future as an actress. We’ve seen too many new actors and actresses making it big in awards season only to fade into oblivion as a result of taking on terrible scripts and characters. And she deserves the chance to one of the greats, to become a film legend: she’s got all that it takes. So, not winning the Golden Globe for Best Actress should push her to work harder, to try new things, and to challenge herself more.

In Hollywood, awards are more often than not a matter of lobbying. Still, every once in a while, great performers get the recognition they deserve for their hard work. And yes, Gaga worked really hard; you can see it on the screen. There’s no doubt this has been one of the best performances of the year. But winning awards takes time: actors need time to learn, to polish their instrument, to master the craft. To achieve such recognition is best when you earn it for the hard work, and not because it was a popularity contest. Effective lobbying takes you to red carpets, but great performances will get you awards, eventually. And yes, Gaga’s performance was beautiful, one of the best of the season. And she deserves the Globe. Just not right now.
