Just a couple of years ago, Pokémon Go took the world by storm by letting us finally become true Pokémon trainers. The mere idea that we could be able to walk through our neighborhoods and capture all kinds of Pokémon was something innovative that definitely made us walk down nostalgia lane and want to battle everybody in the Pokémon gyms. Well, if the game took us one step forward to live the fantasy, the new Pokémon: Detective Pikachu movie definitely allows us to experience it in a more vivid way.
The movie, based on the 2016 videogame of the same name, tells the story of Tim Goodman, a young man working at an insurance company whose failed dream was to become a Pokémon trainer. It all starts when Tim is told his father, Detective Harry Goodman, has passed away in Ryme City and that he has to go to check on his things. In his apartment, Tim encounters his father’s Pokemon, a Pikachu whose memory has been lost, and more importantly, a Pikachu that Tim can understand perfectly. Together they will try to discover what happened to Harry and why so many people are interested in what he was investigating before the fatal accident that took him and Pikachu’s memories away.
For a movie based on a videogame (which, let’s be honest, tend to be pretty dreadful), Detective Pikachu manages to deliver an entertaining plot and great visuals. Just the fact that we can see these beloved creatures in a real-life style without them looking like poor motley costumes creates a very powerful effect that draws you immediately into the narrative. If you add the Ryan Reynolds factor into the equation, the film becomes a really cool and fun experience.
Like Pokémon Go in its time, the movie is a delight for both die-hard Pokemon fans and those who enjoyed the cartoon in their childhood. Being able to see not only Pikachu, but how other beloved characters like Psyduck, Charmander, Squirtle, Snorlax, Jigglypuff, Mewtwo (ok, spoiler much!) and many more come to life is definitely an experience I highly recommend. No, it’s not the best movie of all time, but I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.
Pokémon: Detective Pikachu will hit theaters on May 10, so prepare your Pokedex and your Pokeballs and get ready to immerse yourself into the extraordinary Pokémon world. Take a look at the trailer:
