It’s a good time for action movies, with films like John Wick: Chapter 3 already here and Charlie’s Angels just around the corner. And the future’s looking even better, as 20th Century Fox just released the new teaser trailer for the Kingsman prequel, titled The King’s Man. The verdict? It looks amazing.
What’s the film about?
The film takes place at the turn of last century, diving into the horrors of World War I. As the new trailer shows, the plot will follow the political tensions of the early 1900s that will eventually pressure a new secret service team to be assembled, forming the Kingsman agency we all know and love.
The story features many ultra-famous historical figures, including Grigori Rasputin, T.E. Lawrence (the subject of Lawrence of Arabia), Mata Hari, Felix Yusupov (the Russian prince famous for his role in the assassination of… spoiler alert! Rasputin), Nicholas II (head of the Romanov family and last Emperor of Russia), celebrated photographer Neil Kenlock, and Gavrilo Princip (the guy who assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand, single-handedly initiating the chain of events that led to World War I).
So, expect to see historical “super-villains” joining forces to plot against humanity, while the new secret service agency forms to rise to the challenge and thwart this threat.
Who’s in it?
The King’s Man will be directed by franchise veteran Matthew Vaughn, who also directed the previous two films. We’ll also get an ensemble cast to match the film’s incredibly famous historical characters, featuring Ralph Fiennes as T.E. Lawrence, Liam Neeson as Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener, Rhys Ifans (Notting Hill, The Amazing Spider-Man) as Grigori Rasputin, Gemma Arterton (007’s Quantum of Solace, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time) as Mata Hari, Daniel Brühl (Inglourious Basterds, Rush) as Felix Yusupov, Charles Dance (Game of Thrones) as Field Marshall Haig, Tom Hollander (Pride & Prejudice) as Nicholas II, Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond) as Neil Kenlock, and Harris Dickinson as the agency’s fresh recruit, Conrad.
Joining this ensemble are also Stanley Tucci, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Matthew Goode, Alison Steadman, Robert Aramayo, Alexandra Maria Lara, and Joel Basman. So, rest assured we won’t be lacking talent in the acting department.
When is it coming out?
The prequel, originally titled Kingsman: The Great Game, expands the Kingsman universe into an extensive historical narrative that’s sure to please fans of the films. If the trailer’s any indication, the prequel will keep the franchise’s signature over-the-top action and well-timed comedy, though reaching for a somewhat darker subject matter and a slightly more serious approach to deal with it sensibly. Let’s hope this is as far as the film strays from the original, and that the whole affair remains true to the spirit of what made Kingsman: The Secret Service great. In light of the trailer, have reason to be optimistic.
The King’s Man will hit theaters on February 14th, 2020—perfect for an action-packed Valentine’s date.
