After an alleged overdose was reported in the media, Demi Lovato posted a moving statement on her Instagram account where she wrote about her intentions to keep fighting against the addiction that brought her to the hospital a couple of weeks ago. She thanked her fans, her family, and friends for all the support. The former judge from the X-Factor also expressed that “this illness is not something that disappears or fades with time. It is something I must continue to overcome and have not done yet”.
Lovato celebrated six years of sobriety in March but had this relapse on July 24 when she was taken to a hospital. People Magazine reported that the singer was released from the hospital on Saturday and that she will continue her treatment in an in-patient rehab center.
The 25 year-old singer also declared that now she needs time to heal and focus on her sobriety and road to recovery: “The love you have all shown me will never be forgotten and I look forward to the day where I can say I came out on the other side”, she wrote.
She has always been transparent about her journey with addiction: she is a strong advocate regarding mental health and has spoken openly about her self harm tendencies and bipolar disorder. At the forefront of these issues, she has worked to break down the stigma surrounding mental health, and drug addiction: she was the executive producer for the documentary Be Vocal: Speak Up for Mental Health (watch for free here) and is a spokesperson for the a campaign with the same name.
After this statement, several celebrities have shown their support to Lovato: “Mucho amor Demi. We love you”, wrote Luis Fonsi, with whom she sings “Échame la culpa”. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson also showed his support by posting “You will come out on the other side. Stay strong D” while Jeffrey Star said “Your one of the strongest people I’ve ever met, love you.”
