Somehow I have the impression that the word “Queer” is loosely used nowadays. Don’t get me wrong, I love the fact that each day there’s more attention to inclusive language. What I mean is that, in recent years, this word has acquired some sort of popularity, so it appears almost everywhere. However, the word has also become a means of resistance against conservative social and moral standards. Although it’s mostly used to refer to an alternative to the binary identity, the word “Queer” also has the pride essence within it. It has acquired the political intention of defending and celebrating diversity. The word has become a flag for those who seek respect and representation. For that reason, here we’ve chosen seven bands and musicians that have embraced their queer identities and have used their music to spread an important message on equality.
Adult Mom
This indie-pop band from Purchase, New York started in 2012 . It is led by Stephanie Knipe, who identifies as non-binary or genderqueer. Their songs focus on social and political stances regarding themes like gender identity and sexuality with a very fresh sound. They already have three albums. The last one was released this year.
Lora Mathis
Mathis is basically the whole package: a poet, artist, and musician from San Diego. Identifying as non-binary, Mathis sings about gender identity, discrimination, and mental awareness. Most of the songs are a true work of poetry mixed with different genres such punk and pop resulting in a very interesting and unique musical style.
Shamir
With a playful sound inviting to party all night long, post-gender Shamir Bailey is one of the most influential electronic indie musicians nowadays. These songs are filled with a futuristic vibe that, together with their characteristic looks and voice, make us want to keep us with his career.
Hurray for the Riff Raff
Founded in 2007 in New Orleans, Hurray for the Riff Raff’s music deals with subjects like LGBT rights and feminism. However, their way of making it more meaningful and to make a statement is by incorporating these themes into folk, country, and Americana, genres that aren’t popular for being that inclusive. By doing so, they’ve managed to refresh and give a new purpose to these old genres.
Big Freedia
Considered one of the main representatives of the bounce hip-hop movement in New Orleans, Big Freedia or “Queen Diva” has become an icon of the drag and hip-hop culture since the nineties. She’s collaborated with renowned artists and cultural icons like Beyoncé, RuPaul, and Diplo. If you’re looking for something sexy to move your body, this is the right option.
The Cliks
Not only is Lucas Silveria one of the first transgender men to be signed by a major record company, but he’s the frontman of The Cliks, a Canadian based indie rock band that has become one of the most important LGBT music bands in the world. Since their beginnings, they’ve been concerned with spreading the positive message of LGBT rights to the world.
