After the terrible tragedy that transpired at Travis Scott’s Astroworld festival this past November in Houston Texas, the rapper is facing real consequences. A couple of days ago, it was announced that his drink collaboration with CACTI has been officially discontinued as well as some promotions with brands like McDonald’s and an upcoming Fortnite concert. Now, according to Variety, Scott has been pulled out as one of the headliners of the popular Coachella Festival that’s taking place next year.
Out of Coachella
Although neither Scott’s nor Coachella’s reps have confirmed anything, according to Variety the rapper will be officially removed from the lineup. Ever since the Astroworld disaster happened, a Change.org petition to remove Scott from Coachella started and by now it has around 60,000 signatures.
It seems it has worked since sources claim Scott’s agent, Cara Lewis, has already been informed of the decision, and more importantly, they have to pay a fee for cancellation that is normally around 25% of what they agreed upon on the contract. Same sources assure Lewis is still trying to keep the gig, although it probably wouldn’t be a smart move right now with all the backlash the rapper has received and the tragedy being so recent.
10 people passed at the Astroworld festival in November, including a little boy. This has caused rage amongst those in the audience, the families, and the public in general who blame the organization and Travis Scott himself for allowing things to get out of control instead of just stopping the show.
By now, Scott, the organization, and some performers, sum over 140 lawsuits. Although Scott himself has issued full refunds to the attendees, has paid funeral costs, and has canceled his shows, people think it is still not enough and he should face legal consequences.
Who could replace Travis Scott as a headliner?
Coachella’s lineup will be quite different than the one they planned almost two years ago. Travis Scott, along with Frank Ocean and Rage Against the Machine, were the headliners of the edition. However, Ocean recently quit and Scott is likely to be removed from the list. So far, there hasn’t been confirmation on who is going to replace those spots, but we’ll likely have a brand new lineup starting 2022, as the festival traditionally does.
When is Coachella happening?
If everything goes as planned and we don’t face any new Covid variant that makes us go back to quarantine, the Coachella festival will take place on April 15-17 and 22-24 at the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio, California. This year’s theme is “Stagecoach festival.”
