Climate change is a reality that is becoming more and more incessant before our eyes, it is no longer possible to deny that global warming is wreaking havoc in all latitudes of the world, which is why companies like the Japanese firm N-Ark are trying to develop projects that allow us to adapt to climate change. Dogen City is their main project and the most ambitious of them, which proposes the creation of a maritime city to resist the rising tides caused by climate change.

N-Ark is a Japanese firm founded in 2021; initially, its goal was to focus on creating floating farms, but with the growing climate crisis, its purpose has been completely transformed to address the challenges of adapting to climate change. Under its New Ocean concept, it is looking to create multidisciplinary teams of subject matter experts to take the negative situation and use it as an opportunity to make positive changes, or at least that’s what it explains on its website.

An Adaptable Floating City

Along the way, they have designed Dogen City that could house 10,000 to 30,000 residents, which according to its developers would be completely adaptable to climate change. The floating city is divided into three components, the first of which is a habitable ring that creates a bay to protect the inhabitants from tsunamis. This would be staggered to house food and infrastructure so that they are below the habitable areas. In addition, the space occupied by the residents could be reconfigured for the necessary urban functions of the community.

The second level would consist of a high-tech data center cooled by the ocean waters, while the center would house the city’s operating system, as well as most of the medical services. The latter would include a small medical care city, a DNA bank, and a research center, as well as surgical facilities that would also lie underwater. According to N-Ark, the idea of creating them underwater is to lower energy costs and efficient use of space on the surface.

“I thought it would be great if we could create a city where people can naturally improve their health by living in a city designed from the ground up to be advantageous for disease prevention,” shared Yuichi Tei, a graduate professor at the University of Tokyo and one of the developers of Dogen City.

But no matter how much technology a floating city develops, it cannot survive without food, so the Japanese firm proposes to make use of regenerative aquaponics and the efficient circulation of resources. N-Ark is currently working on research to take advantage of the nutrients available in seawater and in that sense, can generate an adaptable soil environment for crops to grow successfully.

For now, the floating city that promises to be fully adaptable to climate change exists only on paper. While the Japanese company is already working on the technologies that will allow it to build its city, for now, it is only a futuristic utopian project.
