Full Worm Moon March 2022: when is it

The full moon will rise once again in the skies and will give us what is known as a beautiful Full Worm Moon. This is the perfect occasion to observe the Earth’s natural satellite in its maximum splendor and reconnect with the cosmos. Here are all the dates, times, and information you need to know to enjoy the astronomical spectacle that the sky has in store for us.

When will the March Full Worm Moon be?

Every month has its own Full Moon that rises in the skies, although there are exceptions where there are two full moons in the same month. However, these are infrequent events that occur only a few times during the year, but when they do occur, the second Moon is called a Blue Moon. This is not the case of the March astronomical calendar, where we will only have one full moon, which is called Worm Moon in the northern hemisphere and Harvest Moon in the southern hemisphere.

The entrance of the full phase of the Moon will start rising this Thursday at 07:20 UTC, when the natural satellite will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun. It will also be visible on Friday’s night! From the Earth’s perspective, its face will be completely illuminated by the sun’s rays, which will reach it without any obstacle.

Why is it called a Full Worm Moon?

Most full moons throughout the year are named after Native American tribes. Native American people lived in complete accord with Mother Earth. They knew that when this moon rose in the skies, the snow began to melt, leaving the earth uncovered; this was the moment in which the worms reappeared indicating the perfect time for sowing.

In the southern hemisphere, on the other hand, it is called the Harvest Moon, because in that region of the planet the summer is ending its period, and it is the right time to harvest what was sown throughout the year before the beginning of autumn.

Why does the Full Moon occur?

The Moon is constantly moving around the Earth, just as our planet does around the Sun. In this cosmic dance, there is a moment when the natural satellite is placed behind the Earth, as seen from the Sun. That is to say, from the solar perspective, first would be our Major Star, followed by the Earth, and finally the Moon. Thanks to this arrangement of the bodies, the sun’s rays reach completely the face of the satellite that faces the night side of the Earth. The result is a beautiful 100% illuminated Moon.

So, take out some comfy chairs and snacks to your roof and get ready to be delighted by the natural spectacle that the Full Worm Moon has for us.
