James Cameron‘s passion for the ocean depths led him to show us part of this world and its risks through film. In a scene of The Abyss, the director portrayed how the implosion of a submersible would look like, which would have happened to Titan.

Recall that on June 19, 2023, the disappearance of the submarine in which five people were traveling to meet the remains of the Titanic was announced. After several days of searching and 96 hours of exhausted oxygen, the U.S. Coast Guard confirmed the death of the crew members, assuring that the wreckage found did correspond to Titan.

What Is an Implosion?

It is important to know that an implosion is not the same as an explosion. The latter has to do with the violent release of energy outward, while the former involves a rapid contraction or collapse inward. In an implosion, the pressure or force is concentrated in the center, causing an object or structure to collapse inward, in this case, the submarine.

Why Titan Imploded?

From the beginning, several experts raised the question of implosion, the big question is: Why did it happen on the Titan submarine? To begin with, the Titan never had a safety certification, despite assurances that it was capable of reaching 4,000 meters under the ocean.

At that depth, the pressure is very strong. To give you an idea, it could share a car like a soda can. A crack in the hull of the submarine would have been enough for the force to cause a violent implosion, disintegrating the pressure chamber where the five crew members were.

What a Submarine Implosion Looks Like

On social networks, a video was disseminated in which they recreated how the implosion of the Titan submarine could have been, which would have occurred four days ago.

Likewise, several took the scene from The Abyss, by James Cameron, who has gone down to the depths of the ocean to feed his passion, which led him to create his most successful production, Titanic.

Search for the Remains of the Bodies Will Continue (Although It’s Futile)

The Rear Admiral of the U.S. Coast Guard affirmed that the search for the remains of the crew members’ bodies will continue, although he emphasized that it is an almost impossible mission since everything indicates that the submersible imploded.

He emphasized that for the search, in the next 24 hours, “we have 9 active ships, medical personnel, and submarine experts.” After this, the investigation will continue remotely and so far it is not known when it will be suspended.
