Going on a trip with the little ones is not easy. Sometimes you also have to deal with awkward glances from other people. In this post, we give you some tips on how to fly with small children and not die trying.
Boarding a plane with kids is quite an adventure, considering that you are traveling with small people who run, cry, get tired, get bored easily, fight with their siblings, or are picky eaters. You may even have to change or clean your kids in the tiny space of a plane toilet.
It sounds overwhelming, we know, because any type of travel as parents means taking care of your children in a non-familiar place. But in the end, it’s totally worth it because your children will remember those days for the rest of their lives and will discover fascinating things. So, try to plan in advance with these ideas, and you will have an enjoyable and happy trip.
1. Before the trip:
This is probably obvious, but it is very important: wear comfortable clothes (this applies both for children and adults). Choose clothes that are easy to put on and take off. Always bring with you something extra to wear if the AC in the plane tends to make you chilly. If your children tend to get their clothes dirty easily, carry an extra set of clothes for them.
Bring plenty of antibacterial gel and wipes on the trip as well because public transport and airports are spaces full of germs.
If you are going to make a long trip through Europe or Asia and have a baby that weighs less than 11 kilos, you have the right to book a carrycot for the trip for free (the maximum weight may vary depending on the airline). Your baby will be more comfy during the trip and may even sleep a bit. Please note that you have to call the airline in advance to book the carrycot.
If your kids are old enough, talk to them about what the trip will be like: if it will be long, how is the place where you are going, etc. Children appreciate it when you explain how things will be in advance, and this might increase the chances of your children following your indications.
If you have to take a connection flight, try to buy flights with long layovers in case there are delays, or in case you have a small emergency at the first airport.
2. At the airport:
Arrive early, as everything takes longer with small children. Try to eat a light snack and make sure that everyone goes to the bathroom before boarding.
For children 3 years old or older, there are ride-on suitcases that can be used to ride and move at the same time. In addition to moving around the airport on their own in a fun way, your kids can store their toys inside. Two brands are popular among parents: trunki and Jetkids. The first sells slightly smaller suitcases, and they can be used for younger kids. The second brand has the advantage that, once on the plane, you can put it in front of the seat and transform it into a mini bed that will allow the children to be more comfy with stretched legs. The downside of these contraptions is the price, so think about how much you really need them.
The alternative to the previous options would be a small backpack. Children love the idea of carrying their own “suitcase” where they can put their toys for the trip.
If your children are under 2, try to use a light umbrella-type stroller or an ergonomic baby carrier, if you want to keep your hands free. It will make it easier for you to go through security or move around the airport.
It is a good idea to move and walk as much as possible at the airport: the children will be tired and might fall asleep on the plane.
3. On the plane:
If your children are old enough, try to get a window seat; they love looking at what’s outside at the airport or in the sky.
Once installed in the seats, ask the cabin crew if there is a gift for the children: some airlines give toys like crayons, puzzles, stickers or stuffed animals.
Remember that children need to move. Take them for a walk on the plane when possible. Keep them hydrated and provide snacks that are easy to eat, like cookies, bread sticks, etc.
4. Bring plenty of entertainment:
Carry light toys that are easy to transport. For children 4 years and older, bring small books. For example, the English publisher Usborne sells a “Travel Activity Pack” with 4 small books that include activities, stickers, and coloring pens.
“Quiet books” are very good for trips because the kids can choose amongst several sensory activities. Magnetic toys are also excellent options because there is a lower chance they will end up on the floor. For example, try a magnetic tangram (didactic puzzle with 7 pieces). You can also carry a magnetic tic tac toe. For younger children, you could bring crayons, small cars, stuffed animals, wooden blocks, etc. Avoid toys with loud music or noise, as they could disturb other passengers who might get impatient around small children.
5. Technology:
Kids love tablets and cell phones. Try to fully charge them before the trip. There are some developers of educational apps for children that have some free good options such as Sago mini, Tiny hands, Happy touch or Tinybop. You can also download their favorite music or a podcast for children.
If possible, bring headphones for kids because the ones on the plane are adult-sized.
You can also download a Netflix series to watch offline or, if it is a long flight, use the airplane screen. For some reason, children love to explore the screen attached to the seat in front of them.
Bonus advice for you
It is likely that your children won’t let you read books or watch movies during the trip. So, take some music with you because it may be the only activity you will be able to do while traveling with your children.
Finally, do not be afraid to ask for help if you need it. Time passes very slowly for children, and they might get restless, but it’s normal. Remind your children that the flight will last only a few hours. Follow these ideas and try to relax. Have a good trip. And do not forget to take many pictures. When you return back home from the trip, they will bring back nice memories.
