The Fila Disruptor II might sound like a video game character or a Jurassic World dinosaur, but no, the “Fila-pucturun Disruptae deux” is more commonly known as the "dad shoe." It was thought to be extinct, but it's back on the streets of Manhattan and London, and social media.
When I first discovered that overalls were making a comeback, I was really excited. I thought they were one of the best things to come out of the 90s, and I was glad to see them around again. But then, the fanny pack came back too. That was a surprise, and not a good one. All of a sudden, it seemed, they were all over Instagram and the fashion blogs I followed, and I didn't get it: how could people bring back such a touristy and tacky fashion item? Still, I took a deep breath and let it go. Then, Balenciaga, Marc Jacobs, and Gucci added fanny packs to their collections. That’s when I finally understood what was going on: nineties style -the good, the bad, and the ugly- was back.
Most recently, dad shoes, specifically the Fila Disruptor II, started popping up everywhere. They took a while to catch on, but when Kim Kardashian, Kendall Jenner, and finally Kylie started rocking them, it was official. Even in the 90s, I wasn't a fan of this kind of shoe, but I have to say that Millennials are pulling them off much better than I thought was possible. After checking out a series of pictures on social media, I realized that these shoes, like any other fashion item, can look good if you know how to accessorize properly. I mean, do I even have to say it? If you're going to wear these, do not go for a "dad" look (tall, white, athletic socks, anyone?). Dads are definitely to blame for these shoes bad reputation, reminding everyone of Back To The Future every time they wear them.
As Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele, former fashion director at Vogue, stated in an interview, fashion is all about attitude. In fact, everything in life is about attitude. It doesn’t matter what piece of clothing or accessory is, attitude is what makes the difference. I would have thought that the “dad shoe” was going to be just a spring-summer revival, but apparently, this already vintage piece of clothing is here to stay a little longer. Not everything in the fall has to be red, brown, or yellow coats and dresses: there are many other ways to put together a cool fall-winter look. Here are a few fashion icons who have rocked these kicks recently. So, get some ideas, dare to try the trend, and mix it up with more classic fall trends.
Side note: there are many other "dad shoes" you can try besides the Fila Disruptor II (as you saw in the pictures). Here's a video of other models, so you can get inspired.
