Whether you like it or not, this is the era of socks. They're literally everywhere with so many types and designs to choose from. For instance, in the past weeks, the world has been following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, not only for his political ideals but also for his particular fashion statements. His bright and colorful socks combined with his elegant suits are often carrying a very clear message. He's not the only one giving socks a fashion relevance. Unless you are a hermit, you’ve probably seen images all over the internet of famous models and celebrities rocking the new trend of wearing socks with heels and sandals. From the classic preppy school girl look to some very innovative combinations, the contrast they create are quite interesting and here we selected 6 ways you can adapt this bold trend and still look elegant and sophisticated.

Open Toe

This is perhaps the shoe combination that first caused a weird impression. Mixing high-heeled sandals with socks gave us that image of old people going to the beach wearing socks and sandals. Sorry. However, once you start looking at the styles and outfits, I honestly think they look great. Yes, it's not common, but, hey, isn't fashion a way of reinventing ourselves? You can use any type of sock, although I'd recommend matching them with liners or quarter socks (not exceeding one-quarter of the leg) with this specific type of shoe. The fabric is up to you, so you can create different textures and color combinations.

Pointy Toe Pumps

This type of heels has become very popular in fashion due to their elegance. The pointy toe gives the impression of larger and more stylized lines. The most subtle way to try this trend is by selecting sheer socks, generally made with tulle or chiffon, which are so fashionable nowadays. You can find them in so many colors and designs that range from polka dots to elaborate embroidered designs. Of course, these are not the only option. You can use any sort of fabric and sock density. The trick is combining the colors or being sure that the pattern of the sock has at least one color that matches the shoe or your outfit.

Platform Pumps

Okay, pumps might not be as fashionable as they were a couple of years ago, but this trend can actually make them rock again. Try combining them with the same color sock, or also assembling a nice color palette for your entire outfit. These look great with skirts and dresses. Although you can try them with trousers, the beauty of this specific combination lies in the contrast it creates with the legs, so, pants might look a little odd. However, there are no rules, you can actually try them, who knows, maybe you'll set a brand new trend.

Ankle Strap

The trick with ankle strap heels and socks is that you must be very picky when choosing the right sock since the strap crosses right in the middle of the foot. For this particular shoe type, I strongly recommend wearing neutral or simple patterns, so you don't look odd. As for the type of socks, unlike the open heels, here you can really go for anything you like: knee, over the knee, calf. It's up to you.
-

T-Strap

Basically the same as with the ankle strap heels. This type is meant to be a statement piece that creates an elongated line on your feet. Again, the best combination I suggest is choosing one colored and neutral sock to create a nice contrast between your shoes and the rest of your outfit.
-

Oxfords

Do you want to evoke that vintage vibe? These shoes are the best way to do so. Oxford shoes and heels have been very popular in conveying that essence of antiquity combined with modernity, and of course, this sock trend wasn't going to forget about them. Most of these shoes come in neutral colors like brown, navy blue, black, and gray. So, I suggest combining them with other hues belonging to that range to keep their essence.

Remember that socks with heels are the statement piece of your outfit. We're used to selecting our shoes as accessories to our looks. However, in this case, they will be the protagonists and the ones receiving all the eyes. Just bear that in mind while planning your killer outfit.

If you're not such a huge fan of heels there are many options to still look formal and elegant. No matter your personal style or preference, remember that we make statements with what we wear, so bear in mind what image and perception you want to make. Perhaps trying new trends is your way of showing the world your bold personality.
